sourdough loaves in Philly or Main Line?

Currently, I drive all the way from Bryn Mawr to the Downingtown Wegmans to get good sourdough bread loaves.

Surely, someone's baking them in the city somewhere?

I hope I don't catch too much grief for this, but I like the sourdough bread at Panera's

Nothing wrong with Panera. Don't be afraid of self-proclaimed "food snobs" who diss any place that has more than one location. Bread is not rocket science, and you don't need a 200 year old brick oven to bake a fine loaf.

Let the poseurs give you grief. If you like something, go ahead and say it !

I'm not coming down on Panera, but as Mason said to Dixon, you gotta draw the line somewhere. What if he/she were to have suggested a place with "more than one location" like a supermarket? I bought some "artisanal" bread from Pathmark once and go it home. It was as soft on the outside as it was on the inside. Moreover I left it out over more than an entire weekend and it never firmed up. What kind if preservatives are being used here?
So it may not take rocket science to make bread but it surely can and does get screwed up; and a lot IMO.

          Thanks

If someone were to recommend PathMark (who does not specialize in bread as Panera does) then a reasonable person might politely take that advice with a grain of salt.

I was merely suggesting that no one need feel embarrassed "I hope I don't catch too much grief for this" for suggesting a purveyor whose wares they enjoy, which the original poster obviously did.

Four Worlds Bakery in W. Philly makes AMAZING sourdough (and many other) breads to order using grains freshly-milled on site. You order in advance and he bakes your bread and delivers it to your selected pick-up site on the designated day. I pick up on Fridays in Horsham but there are numerous pick-up sites/days in various sections of town.

While not loaves, I think the sourdough ficelle and sourdough rolls at trader joe's are excellent.
