Travelling to BDA next week for our annual 5 day visit. Like to eat where the locals do. Any thing new or not to be missed this trip? How is the 'Islander Cuisine' restaurant?

    Welcome back!

Are you staying in the same area as last year or somewhere different?

Haven't heard of that restaurant, will check with co-workers.

Yes, same place this year. Can't wait! Worked w a summer intern who hails from Bermuda. Her parents run that restaurant. Will definately eat there at some point next week. Need to know whats good on the menu.

By any chance, Island Cuisine? Think that's the one on Middle Road by Heron Bay Marketplace. Typical diner food, they're offering up a local lobster special which I haven't tried. I usually frequent Island Cuisine for breakfast (great hangover cure) so cannot attest to any of the other dishes.

Sorry, clearer directions would put Island Cuisine in Southampton by the Fairmont. There is a sister restaurant in town by the Royal Gazette/Quickie Lickie Laundromat called Bermy Cuisine.

Ah, Southampton - rarely go up that way, so not familiar with it.

Have you been to Black Horse in St David's for lunch yet?

The only places I've been to recently are Harry's and Port O'Call for lunch kind of pricy, but I do like sitting outside at Harry's for lunch.

I can't think of anywhere new since you were here last December - can you bdachow?

Let me know if you need transport help for special dinner - be happy to help :-)

Yes, we go to Black Horse every year and have been to Port O' Call. Where is Harry's? Thought we might try Lemon Tree too this year. Thanks for your gracious offer of transport. Your help last year helped make a most memorable 20th wedding anniversry dinner. :)

Harry's is down by Miles Market - on the waterfront. Lemon Tree is a good idea for lunch too. There's a new little coffeeshop - Juice and Beans near the corner of Front and Burnaby with the Barefoot Baker's goodies.

Juice and Beans is a nice little spot for lunch. I enjoy their daily soups and daily muffins.

New...Aqua at Surfside (in Warwick) opened, I wrote a review of my experience, can't say I was overwhelmed by it.

Also new is The Dining Room at Gibb's Hill Lighthouse. I thought the food was better at the Lighthouse than Aqua but haven't been back in a while to try it. It is a nice cozy spot though.

Also new in town for lunch would be Opus Lounge, they're offering a tapas menu I believe so nice for some nibbles. Can't say the atmosphere is great and the food is only mediocre. Lemon Tree is much better.

If you like sushi, try Pearl, it's upstairs at Port O Call but would definitely recommend going during their happy hour which is 5-7pm where everything on the menu is 50% off. They try only to use all local fish which is very nice.

Just had dinner last night at Harry's and it was very nice. Had the squash ravioli with lobster special. Was really nice, nice chunks of lobster meat, nice and sweet and nice fluffy ravioli. The special main of tuna on top of a vegetable ragout was perfectly cooked and seasoned, I was just already too full to really enjoy it. But did manage to stuff down the truffle beignets for dessert, there's always room for dessert.

                  Hope this helps!

How did you find the service at Harry's for dinner bdachow? I was there in September for a friend's birthday dinner and it was like molasses in January - and there were only a few other diners.

Shaebones - if you like Indian I'd recommend House of India - have you been there? They do takeout too.

No, have not been to the Indian place. So on my list is Harry's for sure, Pearl ,and Gibb's Hill Lighthouse. Last year we went to a place in the Flatts that we LOVED (not Rustica) so will definately be back . Thanks all for your help.

Ah, I've eaten in the dining room once and that was ages ago for a special wine makers dinner and it was fine. I always eat in the bar area (either menu) and have been fine but then again, I'm what you might consider a regular. Hee hee...oops.

Shae, if you go to Harry's, you can eat off either the bar menu or the dining room menu in the bar area as long as it's not super busy in the bar. And be forewarned, that Harry's prices run along the lines of Port O Call prices.

Islander for us was mediocre at best...dry rockfish, so so sides..not a place I'd run back..

Back in our beloved Bermuda. Arrived yesterday and after a long much needed nap we duded up and hopped the bus in to Hamilton. Found Harry's and had a very elegant dinner experience @ the bar .We shared the grilled fish sandwhich which was like tuna sashimi and the cuban which was more like a pulled pork sandwhich. Both served w a waldorf like coleslaw and greens. We also split the fennel salad. Licked our plates. Even sticking to the bar menu we felt the sticker shock. Sandwiches, 2 drinks, 2 club soda's and coffee > $100. We'll definately go back...but think we'll be eating pb & j's today,
          :)
Thanks so much for the tip!

Am glad that you enjoyed the food there and yes, the prices still get me everytime but I do so enjoy the atmosphere, food and beverages so factor that into my cost analysis. The price of living on an island!

Enjoy the rest of your trip and if you need any more food tips, let us know. Brrr...it's chilly today!

Can ALWAYS use some food tips. Its VERY breezy today. Took a long walk this morning and have been hanging inside the rest of the day, reading, napping, beating hubs at cards. Heading in to Hamilton soon. I want to check out Miles Market. May sup in the Flatts @ Indigo on the way back. We loved it last year. Any more tips?

*beloved Bermuda* you have no idea how good that makes me feel right now.

Have you tried Beau Rivage at Newstead for lunch? Tomorrow we're supposed to have a lull in the weather, so it might be a good idea to take advantage of it Give them a call and see if they still have a boat service from town, and if not the best way for you to get to it.

No, we have not tried Beau Rivage yet. Is it fancy, expensive? Tell me about Mad Hatters! The bartender and his manager at Cafe Cairo were raving about it. We walked over to check it out for dinner. Had to ask directions from a passer by and he said it was HIS favorite place to eat on the island as well. Lo and behold, they are booked for both lunch AND dinner until after Christmas. What gives? How did this miss my radar? Should I book ahead for next year? :)

Beau Rivage is at the Newstead Hotel. It is fine dining so a little pricy but not nearly as bad as Harry's. Today's exceptional weather would be a good choice, with clear views of Hamilton and the water.

Mad Hatters, I always forget about this place and it's very nice. Very reasonable prices and portion sizes and the food is always consistently good, solid dishes, nothing exceptionally fancy. And yes, sadly, it's quite popular and needs reservations which is why it keeps falling off my radar, I never plan that far ahead.

Swizzle Inn is close and, given the appalling weather forecast, will be cosy.

                        You've been to Rustico already?

Have not been to Rustico yet this year. Indigo this week was a little disappointing. What do you recommend on the Swizzle and Rustico menus?

I haven't been to Rustico in a long time, but my son and his gf really like the pizza there, it's quite thin crust I think.

I tend to go for the hamburger at Swizzle because I really really like hamburgers, but I also like their chili which is made with chunks of beef and not hamburger, no beans either, and it comes with cornbread. The red bean soup always looks good too.

Hope you're OK for getting home tomorrow.

The one time I went there we waited so long for service that we left. That was a long time ago though. Ended up at Swizzle just now after picking up a famished friend off the Air Canada flight - friend loved her burger. I abstained - am saving room for the fabulous sausages and other goodies she's brought from T.O.
