Where to dine in SE Portland?
Whenever we have recently been to Portland, we have dined at Sel Gris and have had wonderful dinners. We will be returning to the area and visiting family in SE Portland in early January, and are very disappointed that Sel Gris is temporarily closed due to a recent fire. Is there anywhere in the reasonably near vicinity that has amazing food...something comparable to Sel Gris in quality and creativity? Please help??
Genoa and Castagna are good suggestions, though both have new chefs, they are probably the highest end dining in SE.
I haven't been to clarklewis in recent history, but it is another suggestion.
Not high end, but great food, great drinks, great service - Laurelhurst Market has the amazing food you are looking for, but not the upscale atmosphere of Sel Gris at all.
Tabla is a bit more casual and a whole lot less expensive, but I have had some great meals there. Nice wines/drinks, great multicourse meal deal (3 courses $24), nice private room for around 12 people. Desserts are their weakest spot, but with 3 courses and wine, that might not matter.
I would offer up Nostrana as a more casual place (rustic Italian), high quality w/lots of local ingredients, good drinks/wine, very good food. A splurge here (their big porterhouse behemoth of a steak for 2, for example), goes a long way. You can make a fancier meal here, or have pizza, or do my favorite thing: drinks, salad, wine, whole fish cooked in wood fired oven, and butterscotch budino for dessert.
Beaker and Flask, though pretty new, was named restaurant of the year. It is equal part bar and restaurant, though, not necessarily fine dining...
