why can I only reserve a table for my party of eight on January 8, 2010, at 6:00 or 9:00? I have tried Maialino and Locanda Verde. Any suggestions or do I have to have connections? Help! It's a birthday celebration and my friends are still working at 6:00 and 9:00 is too late!

You called Maialino and they told you that? IIRC, they only take reservations 4 weeks in advance, so they're not even taking bookings for that date yet. Also Maialino and Locanda Verde are some of the hottest restaurants in town right now given that one of them just opened and the other has gotten lots of great reviews (including from the New York Times).
Does it have to be one of these restaurants with a great amount of buzz? I plugged in 8 at 8pm on 1/8/2010 and Italian on OpenTable and got a bunch of results, so it's definitely possible.
Where else did you try? Was it online on OpenTable (which doesn't always reflect ALL availability for a given restaurant) or by telephone?
