Fresh Soft Taco in Rego Park

icelandadam Dec 7, 2009 04:42 PM

having just moved to the park, being food obsessed i immediately started my quest to find local establishments that i can claim as mine. Fresh Soft Taco is so good. its a chinese run mexican take out place, run by a lady at the register and a single cook. believe they might be a couple...this place uses high quality ingredients no joke. the steak is actually really real meat. the only complaint i'd have if i had one is the shredded jack cheese can be a bit greasy. but when one is enjoying this type of food its comforting. super cheap too. and delivery if u live in the area is the fastest ive ever seen like ten minutes.
oh and the tortillas are made before ur eyes.
my faves-
1. steak fajita and guacamole, onions and peppers in a fresh tortilla 2.39
add jack cheese 1.19

2. jack cheese and jalapeno quesadilla sincronizada 2.99

Your description sounds like this can be any number of Fresco Tortilla fake NY-Mexi-Chinese. Are you saying this place is THAT much better than all the other Fresco Tortilla Chinese-Mexican places? If so, what's so good about it?

It was the very first in the RP/FH area...but its not much better than any of the others...doesn't have shrimp, and its closed on Sundays.

You mean the actual tortilla (not the dish) is made there? That would be unusual for a place like this.

Actually, it's not that unusual. All of those Mexi-Chinese Fresco Tortilla joints make their own flour tortillas. It's not that different than the Chinese pancake that comes with some versions of Peking duck, like the ones at Peking Duck House (I've seen them open a pack of what looks like flour tortillas at PDH to serve with the peking duck there). That was the main selling point to the Mexi-Chinese joints when they sprung up in NYC 15 or so years ago.

Adam, Are you talking about the one on 63rd Drive between Booth and Saunders Street? I've never tried that one despite passing it hundreds of times.

There's one on QB near 67th Road, just over the border in FH, that's nothing special and I think a new one recently opened on Woodhaven Blvd in RP.

I've tried Fresh Soft Taco before. It's on 63rd Drive. Items were inexpensive and tasted fresh, but lacked any depth of flavor. It would have been much better if they served the food with a nice hot sauce or salsa to add some flavor.
