Apizz wine list help

  • 4

I think it is ok to talk about wine/alcohol on the manhattan board? If not, I apologize. But I finally decided on Apizz for a birthday dinner date with my boyfriend (debate here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/670630) and am now faced with a daunting wine list. I want to keep the bottle around $40 (or less would be a plus!) and love full bodied reds, dry and a bit spicier. Now, I know I can ask the sommelier that night, but I worry about being pressured into a more expensive bottle. Does anyone have any recommendations from or experience with this list: http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/...

Thanks for your help!

  1. Bit of a bleh list, and a bit pricey. Frankly, I'd save my cash and order the Primitivo or the Dolcetto or the Nero d'Avola. They seem about right for the menu and your wishes. No reason to overspend on Barolos or Barbarescos here.

I think you'd really like the Cannonau Riserva. I've tried it at Von and it has exactly what you are looking for in a red.

    1. Dolcetto from Piedmont is a bit of a lightweight. Nero d'Avola is an easy going wine with nice spice. If you want more body with soft tannins, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (least well known of Tuscany's big 3) from a sangiovese strain Prugnolo is a good choice. But I would choose the Chianti Classico which has a character of its own with a nice body, fruit depth (has spice), good tannin and great acidity which makes it food friendly. Good luck.
