FYI Roberto Passon is over-rated and been getting worse and worse.
Gazala is the best new addition to the hood. Great food, great people.
Stecchinno is the worst new addition to the hood. Complete design FAIL, over-priced cocktails and brain-numbingly dull menu.
Uncle Nicks is the best old dog in the race. Their whole grilled fish is a delicious deal. The Porgy is only $19 and so good.
Other Likes:
Aheli - new Indian spot. slow service but nice, fresh taste.
Avoid:
Puttanesca - one of the MANY sub-par Italian options in the hood.
Cascina - See above. Even worse, though.
Ralphs - See above.

I was never all that impressed with Uncle Nick's, at least for stuff like gyros and souvlaki. The one exception was when they made roast suckling pig sandwiches for the 9th Ave Food Festival. I also dig Roberto Passon, particularly the carbonara and trecolori salad, though it's been over a year since I dined there, so maybe things have changed.

Roberto Passon just left the restaurant. They're getting a new chef

Is Roberto Passon open or closed?
Yes, but under a new name. From the NY Times:
"GIULIANO Roberto Passon has ended his run as chef at the restaurant that bore his name. Now it’s up to the new marquee chef, Giuliano Matarese, from La Carbonara: 741 Ninth Avenue (50th Street), (212) 582-5599."

Marseille is a great place; likewise Amy's Bread. There is an Indonesian resto, Bali, that is also very nice.
Yesterday I enjoyed a great sandwich at Hallo Berlin. They've been kicking around Manhatten at various locations for years.
Really tasty wurst on a crusty roll with sauteed onion, red cabbage, and saurkraut and a glass of German beer...all for less than $9. German tubesteak at it's best.
I was saddened however to learn that Rolf, the owner, passed away last month at age 57. I do hope the enterprise survives his passing...it is one of Manhatten's best lunch (or dinner) deals, flavor-wise and value-wise.

A bit stale? How so? And what specifically?
I only ask since their stuff always seems the freshest on the street, especially those great breads!

Later in the day, I find that the breads and rolls get a little stale.

Interesting.
I honestly can't say I've ever encountered that problem. I find that their bread products hold up quite well, even taken home and enjoyed the next day.

I had the worst sticky bun ever from Amy's. It looked like fun (well, to me it did, my sister-in-law expressed a different opinion on first sight, but that's a different story) but it turned out to be an utterly bland, stale white roll with some sticky stuff slathered on top. To me, a sticky bun should be a rich, cinnamony roll infused with what have you, rolled in what nots, etc. Not this one. Worst EVER!

-Room Service (for their amazing lunch specials and decor)

Dislike:
-Kyotofu (I realllly wanted to like it but their key lime tofu tasted like windex and nothing else was memorable.)
-Basilica (Amazing no-fuss italian, and they make their own pasta, but once a manager asked my friend and I to leave after we finished dinner because he needed the table - only ten or so tables. And we had ordered wine and dessert and had yet to finish our last glass. It was unforgivable.)

Try their fish. Their avgolemano soup is pretty good, too, though I ask for more lemon to squeeze in. I did like the food at Dafni more, in general, though. Crazy-large portions there, however!

We were just at Dafni last Sunday - their taramosalata is brilliant as was the grilled striped bass I had (perfectly cooked, the flesh all curdy and moist) and my husband's shrimp with feta. Love their Greek fries. Good wine list with interesting and unusual bottles, reasonably priced. Really a very nice restaurant.

Bocca de Bacco (828 9th) has provided nothing worse than "very good" and the BEST octopus I've ever had (and I've had my share ... maybe a few other folks', too).
The Eatery has also been consistently good, especially the mac 'n' cheese (of which I've had ... oh, never mind ... I just stopped in here for a bit on my way to a Big and Tall clothing site ...).
Have only had fish at Uncle Nick's, and it has always been quite good. The dining companion has ordered some of the "usual" Greek fare and found it OK, sorta ...
Halo Berlin makes up with taste what it lacks in atmosphere. The 10th Avenue version sounds like it's worth trying; taste and atmosphere may be on a par there.

The last I checked, unfortunately, Hallo Berlin was out of business at its 9th Av. location. Did they move? [Edit: I see they moved to 10th Av. I can't wait to tell my friend who introduced me to them!) That would be good news, as I was a latecomer and enjoyed their food and good, inexpensive beer and wine.
You described Uncle Nick's perfectly: Very good fresh fish, with most other things kind of mediocre.
