Il Poggiolo - Hinsdale

At at this fairly new entry to the DuPage area a few nights ago, and I have to say I was impressed. Located in downtown Hinsdale, the owners converted what locals will remember as the old Schweidler & Mewherter stationary store into a gorgeous space. (Their website says they converted an old silent movie theatre space...that must have been quite a long time ago, since I have lived around Hinsdale for 30+ years, and that place was always a stationary store!) The executive chef comes from being the exec chef at Coco Pazzo, Bice Restaurant, Gioco and Via Ventuno.

A beautiful bar extends the length of the lower level dining room, and twenty-foot ceilings make it seem even more spacious. An open kitchen is tucked away in a corner, and an upstairs area looks like it features more seating for private parties or busy nights. The decor is interesting, with deep reds the dominant color, and a focus on art as a decorating theme (coffee table books on artists stacked on shelves around the restaurant, small sculptures arranged behind the bar, etc.)

Food prices were fair, with appetizers in the $7-$9 range, pizzas running $12-$14, pastas $12-$16, and a limited menu of fish, chicken, and beef entrees in the low $20's. I ordered a Rigatoni con Salsiccia e Piselli (Rigatoni in a tomato cream sauce with peas and sausage), and asked to switch the rigatoni to penne, which they did for me, no problem. My date had the Gnocchi al Pomodoro, and both were excellent. The waiter we had was polite and attentive. We also had a chocolate cake appetizer with Italian cherries, which was good, but not remarkable; I would be interested in trying their other offerings.

Wine selection was good, although prices were a bit high in my opinion, with each of our glasses running around $10. After tax and tip, it ran us about $70 with two drinks, two entrees, and a dessert. Overall, the food, ambiance, and service were all quite good, and I would certainly return.
