Happy hour near UCSD
I'm visiting a friend at UCSD but he's got some work to do so I'm looking for some happy hour/drink special places for the afterwork/early evening hours in the approximate surrounding area. Any suggestions? Not picky about whether it's super fancy or a total dive---just looking for a good value at either level. I only have 2 days in SD so I'd prefer not to venture too far into the middle of nowhere/into a not-fun neighborhood.

Its only a few minutes down La Jolla Shores drive to la jolla, I'd recommend that route, since you're only around for a couple of days. We always used to like to catch the sunset at Georges at the Cove although thats more on the pricey side of things. Fantastic view though!! I'm not sure what the cool kids are doing in la jolla these days since I moved down to hillcrest, another idea for a quick cheap drink is the crabcatcher although I'd avoid the food.

I third Porter's Pub on campus. The beer selection is unmatched for miles around, and it's pretty cheap to begin with. Also, they have foosball.. though that may not help or interest you if you're drinking alone.
edit: oops, I meant to reply to the OP. My bad.. how do I move this comment to the original thread?

I'll second the recommendation of Porter's Pub, if you are interested in having the chance to try some good beers.
You also might want to consider Jai by Wolfgang Puck, which is also on the UCSD campus by the La Jolla Playhouse. It's a more upscale option that is still conveniently located, and they have a happy hour:

You could always also head into Downtown La Jolla to Karl Strauss or Whisknladle, which also both offer happy hour specials.

Well, you will be in a not-fun neighborhood - no need to venture there.
Very few happy hour deals. Rock Bottom has slightly better prices on the beer and drinks from 4-7, and a bar menu with special pricing, but depending on the day it can be standing room only in there - probably because there are few other options.
Even though they don't have Happy Hour pricing, you might try Porter's Pub on the UCSD campus, for its convenience and decent beer selection.
