First date chowhounding

I'm not too thrilled at the recommendation of my date for tomorrow (mediocre Italian place that seems too busy and loud). Any suggestions East of the 405 to downtown LA? It's a first date, so keep that in mind!! hehe

The foolproof 1st date rec. : Lou on Vine.
I like Brunello Trattoria in Culver City not so much because of the decor (totally bland) but the food is good and you can hear yourself have a decent conversation.

Any of the popular French bistros or winebars should do the trick.
