Visitng ATL from ethnic food wasteland. Someone suggested Desta, but can't find any reviews or recent postings re: Ethopian food. Any advice from local chowhounds is appreciated. Thanks.

Meskerem is solid, but the Ethiopians who staff Whole Foods Mkt on Briarcliff swear by Desta.

We wet to Desta today, based on these recommendations, and were not disappointed. We had the fish tibs and the vegetarian platter. Both were delicious and much cleaner flavors than Queen of Sheba.

I have an acquaintance who is Ethiopian and for quite some time, he recommended Queen of Sheba as being the best Ethiopian in metro Atlanta. I have enjoyed my meals thoroughly at Queen of Sheba. Lately, he has recommended Desta as the best in metro Atlanta. I have not yet been to Desta - but his recommendations have always been spot on.

I have now been to Desta and it was the best Ethiopian experience I have ever had. Queen of Sheba is very good and has always been enjoyed, but Desta is a serious step beyond. The service was very attentive and helpful and the food was delicious. Everyone in our party raved about the fish tibs.

Meskerem used to be located by the Tara theater. It's now on the corner mentioned in the reply below, where there a total of 4 Ethiopian places on one corner. I have been curious about Desta for ages and still not been to it (they advertise in CL a lot). However, I have been to Meskerem many times and love it. It's cheap and unpretentious, they have a liquor license, and it tends to be half-full of Ethiopians, which I take as a good sign. I almost always get the Doro Wot or the Vegetarian platter. Love them both. I grew up in a part of LA that has many Ethiopian restaurants and find Meskerem comparable in quality. They're also very friendly and will keep bringing injera until you can't take it anymore. My favorite is the lentil one with the thick spicy red sauce tho I can't think of it's name right now. One thing: nothing there (to me) is super spicy. I like very spicy food, and would qualify this as fairly mild (but very flavorful and yummy!)

I agree on Meskerem, it's quite good. The two Ledet locations are not bad at all either. Another one we liked was Enat. We've been to Desta once, and it just didn't click for us. We didn't have the fish tibs though, which is the one dish they supposedly do very well. Maybe one day we'll give it a try.

2nd Desta, it is a cut above the rest. At the intersection where desta is (Briarcliff&Clairmont) there are 4 Ethiopian restaurants. I think Meskerem, Ledet, Buhe and Desta. Fish tibs and chicken tibs are not to be missed.
