South Beach ~ THE ALIBI ~ Philly Cheese Steak

Inside Lost Weekend (dive bar) grillin & chillin
218 Espanola Way
Up to our eyeballs in the unmitigated BS that is Art Basel, AB & I took a break yesterday afternoon for a preview of The Alibi, a cook top carved out of the corner of Lost Weekend (a favorite dive bar). The tiny kitchen is surrounded on 2 sides by a floor to ceiling chalkboard with the menu handwritten all over it. A friendly Philadelphian stood behind the pass slicing "real Amoroso rolls" and told us the grand opening wasn't until Thursday Dec 3 when free stuff would be handed out to all interested parties.
After a little cajoling and the exchange of a secret Philly/Jersey handshake, we got a South Philly Steak and a Philly Chicken (w/provolone NOT Whiz though it is available) wrapped in plain brown wrappers and headed over to play a few games of pool on the dirty tables.
The over-processed glitz that is BaselMB faded away.
A private word to netmover: > > >Yes.
Philly fans with little patience for gritty dives should consider take out. Non-Philly fans should try the Po Boy (perhaps not for dessert as we did but try it nonetheless).
As we left, the smiling grill guy asked that we send our friends -- especially other Philadelphians.
Done and done.
On Monday, I savoured a Philly there while enjoying one dollar PBR's! It was unreal and will spare me and my car several trips to Sonny's. I went yesterday for a late lunch only to find they do not open until Happy Hour. Really good stuff! Not sure how they will keep the bread fresh since it's from Philly, but so far so good.
Now along with Art Deco we got Art Basel! Viva el arte, viva Miami Beach.
