Winnipeg Gold Eyes

Mr.D Dec 1, 2009 08:12 PM

Once upon a time ago you could go to Daiters in Kensington or on Bathurst St and buy the most delicious Winnipeg Gold Eyes. Not anymore. Now I know they are still being made because a friend of mine was nice enough to bring me back two of them when he visited Winnipeg and lord knows were they ever delicious. I savoured every bight. So does anyone know if there is any delis or any store for that matter that may be carrying the Gold Eyes here in TO. Thanks in advance for any info you may have

This place is not in Toronto but it does specialize in shipping all over to "hungry for a taste of home" expat Winnipeger's, including smoked Gold Eyes. www.nostalgiafoods.ca
    Good luck with your search

Yeah, they are very good. I have your answer. Mike's at St. Lawrence Market will bring them in by special order. They used to carry them regularly and they sold relatively well, but it was hit and miss; he doesn't want to get stuck with them if it's a miss. So, call Mike's at (416) 368-0876. They cost $20 per pound and there is no minimum order.

If there is no minimum order, they must be buying it somewhere in Toronto. Now you just have to find out from who. Many years ago (in the early 80's) , there was a smoked fish seller at a flea market on Yonge about 5 km north of Major Mackenzie, and I would see smoked Goldeye there.

I just spoke to Mikes because I want them too. He told me he ships them in and THERE IS NO MINIMUM. Call yourself and ask.
