Knowing which previous post the post you are reading is replying to

Jfood stumbled on this about 2 weeks ago and someone else just posted this process as well on another thread.

If you are wondering which previous post a poster is responding to you click on the name next to the "re:" in the upper right of the post and it will highlight which post above is the reply to. For example jfood replies to a post by "foodie987" yet there are four posts by foodie987 already in the thread. In the upper right of jfood's reply it will read "re: foodie987". If you click on it, the replied to post will turn yellow above.

Jfood apologizes for the horrible grammar but it is extremely helpful.

  1. I just noticed for the first time today that when I selected one of my posts from "All Activity", that it briefly came up highlighted yellow even though my specific entry was closed.

    1. The thing that annoys me, as I've said many times, is when I hit Reply I'm bounced to the top of the thread then have to scroll way down to find the open reply box. In the past the reply box opened directly beneath the post to which I was replying.

I believe that is only if you are replying to the OP...
What annoys me is when you click on a poster's name in the upper right corner, the post highlights in a momentary yellow glow, but the whole thread may fly to the beginning or stay where it is and move up a notch or two, to the post you were looking for. (I believe, in theory, the view is re-centering on the selected post)
If this is the first time you do this on a previously visited thread it might not be hard to find the person's post when you scroll back down, but often it can get lost in a sea of open posts. This doesn't help when you were probably trying to make some sense of one or two specific interchanges in the first place.

Well... I just clicked on Reply under your excellent explanatory post and was bounced to the top. But I do know what you mean about "getting lost in a sea of open posts." That happens with alarming regularity on the Home Cooking board.

What browser are you using? I use Chrome, version 3.0.195.33. I don't like Firefox (I can't expand the box in which I am responding, nor does it duplicate a page tab), and I avoid Internet Explorer if I can.

Interesting in that it opens directly beneath the post jfood is replying to using IE. Are you sure it happens then or when you hit "reply to original post."

        3. Scar: I use IE7...
JFood: It happens when I hit Reply to Original Post, and when I hit Reply to respond to an individual poster.

          Cue theme from Twilight Zone.....

That would be annoying (not the theme music which would be welcomed)
