Gourmet Version of Peanut-Butter Cups? Anywhere in Vancouver or S. Vanc Island?

anewton Nov 29, 2009 03:34 PM

Hey All:

I am a lifelong fan of Reese's peanut butter cups but even I must admit the quality of the chocolate and peanut butter used is poor. I am wondering if there any "gourmet" spins on Reese's peanut butter cups using good-quality dark chocolate and decent peanut butter. I know that Chapter's Books of all places is advertising that they are selling the "ultimate" chocolate peanut-butter cups this holiday season, and I know that Purdy's has a version, but I am wondering if there are any places in Vancouver or Victoria upscale from Purdy's/Chapter's that are making a version. I don't really like Purdy's chocolate, and I can't imagine that Chapter's is much better (but I will give it a try).

Any ideas?

Not an actual "cup", but the Ghirardelli Peanut Butter squares are sublime. Good quality milk chocolate with peanut butter filling and not too sweet. I love Reese's and you can trust me these are fabulous.

Maybe you can get these in Vancouver, I have not seen them in Calgary. You could maybe order online from Ghirardelli; I have so far only seem them in the US, and stock up every time we go.

I just checked -- they do not ship outside of the US, boooo!

Well, I know a company (www.shipito.com) that can ship your order outside of the US for you. You give Shipito's address to the store (ex: Ghirardelli). Once they receive your product, they send it out for you.

I'll be on the lookout, anewton. (I too am not a fan of Purdy's).

I'm not remembering anything....I did recently buy some pistachio-creme filled Lindts at London Drugs (2 bars for $5) that had the same kind of sugar-vibe as a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup.

organic Valencia peanut butter and dark chocolate spread at Donald's.

I remember you posted elsewhere and it sounded great.

Ah yes! That's a spread though.

I too will be on the lookout and will report if I find said item.

Might Thomas Haas make a spin on the peanut butter cup?

I'll have to pop over to find out! I may be in the 'hood this week.

I was at a tasting where I met one of the chocolatieres at Thomas Haas and she specifically mentioned that they are a no peanut facility. Sadly. (But very good for friends with severe peanut allergies!)

Theo Chocolate in Seattle makes a peanut confection, but it has a graham cracker crust... not pure peanut butter goodness. Xoxolat in Vancouver carries Theo, but does not have all products all the time. Might try giving them a call to see what they know?

I have to admit, while not a general fan of Purdy's, those peanut butter daisies are really, really tasty... But one can most definitely go upscale from there in Vancouver. I now for sure that Chocolate Arts does a peanut butter cup that's very good (it's taller, like a scaled down pint glass). I am also fairly certain I've seen something peanut buttery at Monde Chocolate, though it may have been a bar.

            I forgot about DC Duby.
They have a creamy peanut praline that sounds good. (I never had that particular one, but their chocolates are generally outstanding).

I love peanut butter cups too. I tried the ones at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory this summer...they were goooood. don't know how they compare to the Purdy's ones.

here is where they are in BC

Another vote for not loving Purdy's except for the daisies.

I noticed Chocolate Arts (my fave) makes a peanut butter item, but I don't think I've had it specifically.

I love Bernard Callebaut chocolates and all that, but nothing for me beats Reese's... except for maybe a really gooey rich chocolatey cupcake.

Still I agree - a better quality version of the peanut butter cups may be heaven... I'm looking forward to hearing the results of this. Would it be feasible to maybe take a walk down Whole Foods or Urban Fare to see if they have any organic variety?

I've gotten ones from Rocky Mtn chocolate factory before. I'd put them in and around the Purdy's range for not-quite-gourmet....and they're giant - can't remember $$ - but they were about the size of 5-6 regular Reese's.

Believe it or not, President's Choice (Superstore etc) sells amazing peanut butter cups.
