Swell (old Bar Crudo space)...not much going on here
Went here to check out this restaurant on the recommendation of some blogs and posts. We were surprised that the place was almost empty at 7pm on Friday night, not a good sign. They have a nice concept and the space is fun and quaint, but Swell is lacking in execution and flavor. Overall, nothing was bad but almost every dish left us wondering what the chef was thinking. We had the mushroom soup, ceviche, spicy tuna tartare, black cod brulee, crab cake, and bouillabaisse. All were lacking in flavor except for the bouillabaisse, which was out of balance with an overwhelming smokiness. The fish in the bouillabaisse was slightly overcooked too. The spicy tuna tartare was the biggest miss because there wasn't even a hint of spiciness. The other dishes were just lackluster and missed any sign of special touches that would justify the price (over $100 for two). I'll give them two stars for the space, nice staff, and average food.
