Spice Market update

We are going to be in Manhattan next weekend. I would appreciate an update on Spice Market. Is it still good? Any particular dishes to consider? Thanks for your help!

  1. Generally considered Jean Georges Vongerichten's failure. Tourist trap. Cool space though.

    1. went again a few weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised by the food. We had a variety of dishes and no misses in the bunch.

      1. The cocktails there are REALLY good. Maybe a good place to have a drink before or after dinner since the food gets mixed reviews.

        1. Finally got there for the first time, with some out-of-towners. As everyone says, it's a real nice space. Hopping bar (on Friday night anyway). We did the tasting menu, $45 for "10 courses, five tastes", whatever the five tastes meant (sweet/spicy/...?).

I was VERY impressed with the food. Many of the specialties are on the tasting menu, and several of them were spectacular. I think the restaurant was hot so many years ago that people forget why. It was one of my better meals in NYC in the past year, and that is saying something. Samosas were great, fish was excellent, shaved tuna, all of it was worth a taste. And quantities weren't skimpy, was a hell of a deal we thought.

Gewurtz Sangria rocked as well, had 2 pitchers. If you haven't been yet, it's an easy reservation, and well worth finally getting to.

I tend to agree with the supporters of Spice Market. We went recently just because we needed something to eat and they had space. We had heard the less than stellar comments but gave it a try because, like I said, we really needed to eat. We were pleasantly surprized and had a hard time figuring out what all the negative comments were based on.

          2. Spice Market has long been maligned since it dropped from its height in 2004, but the recent one star review from the NYT probably prompted Jean-Georges to spend more attention there. I've heard the food has improved since then.
