Snow Ice Cream
I'm curious if anyone has tried this, and what is the best method and recipe? I just happen to have a bunch of heavy whipping cream in the fridge leftover from Thanksgiving and some fresh fallen snow in my backyard from our recent huge snowstorm but I've never tried it before. Thank you! =)

My mother used to make this back in the 60's..it was delicious with very few ingredients; sugar, cream and vanilla and of course, snow....melt in your mouth. I haven't thought about that in years and sorry I don't have a recipe....

Whether you use actual snow or shaved ice, the ice cream made from these recipes ends up about the same. The snow doesn't really do anything for the flavor or texture. But it does add to the conversational aspect of enjoying the end result.

Here's what I would do: Dissolve your sugar and vanilla into the cream, and let it cool. Then take your bowl of snow, and add the liquid a little bit at a time until it's the consistency you want. If you add to much liquid and it's mushy, go get more snow.
I also mixed maple syrup with my cream, made OJ-snow and apple cider-snow slushes...we hardly ever got enough snow for it when I lived in Raleigh, so when we did I usually went crazy eating it with anything I could find in the kitchen...

Snowcream! Of course! My friends and I used to make this stuff all the time (80s Kentucky), before our parents heard about acid rain and wondered what all the little black specks in the snow were. :)
We'd never really measure and just mixed milk/cream, sugar and vanilla to taste. (Some recipes also use egg yolks, but our parents were clued in to the dangers of raw eggs, even if they weren't, yet, to the dangers of acid rain and strange particulates.) Most recipes call for a ratio of around 1 cup milk to half a cup of sugar, a tsp. of vanilla or some other flavorings (peppermint extract?), and a big mixing bowl full of snow. Mix everything but th snow, together. Add about two quarts of snow and then smaller amounts until you get the consistency you like.
Lucky you!! =)

Snow ice cream = Americanized Taiwanese shaved ice.

Had it back in the '50s in Maine, where there's lots of snow: whipped cream folded with fresh snow and maple syrup poured on top. My Maine-iac Dad's favorite!

Thanks for all the replies! Here is what my daughter and I ended up making: http://breadchick.blogspot.com/2009/0...
It turned out great. My 3 year old was extremely proud of her skills in the kitchen. I'll definitely be trying this again in the future with some different extracts.
