What's the deal with Five Guys?

I ate at the arboretum location today for lunch and must say that the experience left a lot to be desired. I realize that one try may not be indicative of a restaurant and I usually give them a second chance. When I got the burger it appeared overdone and dry, which I found to be an understatement once I bit into it. The fries (enough for an army, and not a small one at that) were better, and I liked that they had the skins on, but they were rather tasteless. Overall a very forgettable experience. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day or something. Thoughts?

I think that Five Guys is "all right." In other words, by no means the worst -- or best -- burger in Austin. Having said that though, the Guadalupe location seems to be better than the Arboretum location which gets orders wrong and which seems to dry their burgers out.

5 Guys is another one of those places where you have to get the double burger. There's a reason why it's the default selection. the single sucks. I've only been to 5 Guys once in Austin but have been there a dozen times in VA & OH and it's always been plenty greasy the way it should be however the Austin location did seem a step below the others. The fresh jalapenos are awesome.

I second those jalapenos. I'm more happy with their hot dog than their burgers. The fries are way better than P. Terry's. And although I like Dog Almighty's dogs I think their hamburgers are better. Weird.

I did get the regular (double) and it was very dry, not greasy in the least. Extremely overcooked and dry.

for me, five guys thrives based on their toppings more than anything else. i really like getting their junior cheeseburger (or their jr. BACON cheeseburger) "all the way." they load it up with lots of great caramelized onions and mushrooms that mix really well with the deliciously gummy bun. add some free peanuts and you've got a cheap and filling meal.

Yes, I must say that the toppings were the only saving grace to the burger. They were fresh and crisp, but everything else was way below par.

I agree that they are forgettable. Have you been to Phil's Icehouse on Burnet? Now that's a memorable burger. The fries, sweet potato fries and onion rings are all very good.

I gotta say, there are two places in Austin that are so highly overrated it makes my blood boil. Phil's is one of them. this is consistently one of the worst burgers in town. rubbery overcooked meat and dry bread. every single time i've been ther. makes 5 guys look great in comparison.

Would Hut's be the other? ;) I don't think Phil's is that great, BTW. I am curious to know what are your favorites, ieat thereforeiam??

the other most overrated joint in austin is salvation pizza. I didn't mention it because this is a burger thread.

When I want a greasy thin double cheese burger i usually hit top notch or dirty's. If I want nice fat hearty burger Houston's just isn't gonna be beat. Austin L&C ain't bad either. roaring fork's big ass burger has left me happy too.

I did enjoy Mooyah quite a bit. Since they switched, I haven't been as impressed but i'll give it another try.

5 guys, hat creek and mighty fine are respectable and use decent ingredients, but I find their burgers bland.

Casino is hit or miss and I just haven't been back in a while since a bad experience.

                    P. Terry's is ok if you want a good version of a macdonald's burger.

Hill-Bert's is not good. something just isn't right there.

Hut's is ok. If I HAVE to go there for a biz lunch, i usually get the dagwood.

                    Terra burger was insulting.

                    probably forgetting something
I don't get into the french fry thing so no comment there.
