2009 - What was open on Thanksgiving?
Just a note for next year for anyone who has to make a desparate last minute pit stop.
Safeway seemed open all day. When I returned home at about 6 pm, the Safeway near me was still open.
Whole Foods, Andronico's and Lucky were open in the morning.
CVS and Walgreens were open all day.
I was based in the East Bay this year. Every African restuarant and market on Telegraph was open.
Neldham's was open in the morning. Bakesale Betty was open in the morning. I got the feeling it may have been a pick-up only situtation, but not sure. A new produce market across the street next to the pawn shop was open.
Almost every Chinese restaurant on San Pablo was open though from the lack of cars I saw in the parking lots, they may as well be closed. About 90 % of the restaurants and markets were open in Oakland's Chinatown. The bonus was that it wasn't overly packed and parking places were relatively easy to snag.
Lots of coffee shops were open ... mainly of the Starbucks and Peet's variety. Crepevine was open
Many fast food joints of the KFC, IHOP, Denny's, Carrow's and Jack in the Box type were open. McDonald's closed at 3pm. Scoff if you will, but there were years where circumstances had me in need of any type of food on Thanksgiving or Christmas and sometimes even these close.
Two restuarants I didn't have on my massive Thanksgiving list were open and serving holiday meals. The restaurant at the Lake Merrit Hotel had a Thanksgiving dinner sign. The dining room overlooks the lake so that might have been nice. Bacheeso's had a sign up for a Thanksgiving buffet and was packed when we drove by
Oh yeah, of all places, Tomm's BBQ was open. Yet once again I was in a situtation where I couldn't stop. I was so stuffed from brunch even the thought of food or takeout wasn't possible.

Good point on what was closed. I think Raley's is closed on Thanksgiving.
Also significant is what is open the day after.
I sadly learned when I was living in SF. that Berkeley Bowl and Monterrey Market are closed the Friday folloiwing Thanksgiving. Most of the bakeries are closed. Neldham's was open Friday, but that may have been a fluke due to their impending move.

Yep, I walked to the Monterey Market on Friday and found it closed. Westbrae Natural Grocery was open, however.

FAT is supposedly the slowest grocery shopping day of the year, so it's a good day to give everyone an extra day off after the hectic pre-TDay week and with the rest of the holiday season ahead.

I noticed that Koreana Plaza and Oasis were open.

Several places in Alameda Marketplace was open in the morning. The grocery closed at noon (I got there just under the wire, having discovered that I'd grabbed cilantro instead of Italian parsley). Feel Good Bakery was open, but looked like it was getting ready to close. Same with Culina. Baron's was closed, but I know they were open earlier for people to pick up orders.

Millbrae/Burlingame: The Kitchen and HK Flower Lounge were open and looked busy from a drive-by. Some of the smaller Asian restaurants on ECR looked closed. Lunardi's was open and well-stocked in everything except the deli, which had lots of cold salads but fewer hot items than usual. Starbucks and several independent coffee shop/diners in the Lunardi's shopping center were open, at least for morning/lunch; the sports bar was doing land-office business. Safeways in Millbrae and Burlingame were open, Mollie Stone's was closed. On Broadway, most restaurants looked closed but it was around 11 AM when I drove by, so some might have been just getting ready to open. On Burlingame Avenue, La Boheme was open, Burger Joint's OPEN sign was lit but it didn't look open, Crepevine was open, Straits, Kabul, and Stacks were closed.
