SEA - Shuckers, a quick review
I was meeting a friend in town for the weekend and had a craving for Pacific Northwest seafood, in particular, oysters. Having scanned the boards here, it was either wander to Pike Place to Elliots (?) or be lazy and ride the elevator down to Shuckers. Well, given the chilly temperatures (it’s cold compared to where I live!), it was a ride down the elevator.
The DP and I both ordered up a dozen assorted oysters each, including Hunter Points and Kushis (did I mention the oyster craving?). They were wonderfully fresh and tasty and went down exceptionally well. Nit picky point, the oysters weren’t shucked that well as the first 4 oysters the DP had all had bits of shell in them. The DP stopped commenting after that. Mine weren’t too bad, I did note one with a particularly larger flake of shell in it but wasn’t too particularly fussed. He also had the crab cocktail to start, no comment and he wasn’t sharing so I can’t offer up information on that dish. I ordered one of the fish of the days, which was a wild salmon and he ordered the steamed mussels as his main. The mussels weren’t that fresh unfortunately. They were sticking to both sides of the shell, which I’ve been told is a sign of freshness. I have no idea if that’s true or not but I’ve not been told otherwise, and the person who told me was a chef. Any truth to this? The salmon I ordered was very nicely cooked. Not overdone and nice and moist. A little underseasoned perhaps. The sides of asparagus and mashed potatoes were decent although the sauce was a little sweet which at first, seemed to clash with the flavors of the sides and salmon but grew on me after a while. Nothing exciting and inspiring and given the prices, it was only ok.
Ended the meal with pumpkin cheesecake and a berry pie. Both were delicious but nothing spectacular.
Unfortunately, I think the mussels did my DP in as he ended up being quite ill for the rest of the night. So all in all, not the most satisfying meal. Would I go back, probably only for the oysters, everything else was quite average. Perhaps we should have braved the chilly weather...
