French Bistro in Georgetown area?
We will be staying in Georgetown next weekend. Our favorite restaurant is Obelisk & we'll eat there Thurs. But is there an interesting, French bistro type restaurant nearby, or in the downtown or DuPont area?

There's a French bistro in Georgetown, but I'm blanking on its name (and I've never been there). I can recommend Bistro Du Coin at Dupont Circle, and Bistro D'Oc near Penn Quarter (across the street from Ford's Theater). In spite of the similar names, they're very different in feel and menu.

Hal, the one you're probably thinking of is Bistro Francais on M St. - wouldn't call it "interesting" though. http://www.bistrofrancaisdc.com/
In addition to the two mentioned by Hal, also think about going French-Belgian at Brasserie Beck. http://www.beckdc.com/

bistrot lepic in upper georgetown on wisconsin is charming, and has good food and service. http://www.bistrotlepic.com/
years and years ago i went to bistro francais, where our table of four was treated to very very mediocre food and absolutely horrible service. i always recollect that evening (it was packed, by the way) whenever anyone mentions it.
isn't that place really just skating on its reputation from back in the day?

I guess everybody's mileage will vary. We went during last winter's Restaurant Week on a Saturday because everything else in the area was booked. The place was half-full. The service and food were both very good. I have been meaning to go back, but haven't yet probably due to the bad parking situation in Georgetown.
Maybe about 5 years ago, we went for my birthday to Bistrot Lepic on a friend's recommendation. It was forgettable. So I guess it depends on the particular evening whether your will have good food/service or not.

Yeah....i just have to say that traveling a few blocks east and going to Central is what I would do. It's a few blocks from the Whitehouse.

Bistro Bis, 15 E St NW ...not so far away and well worth a cab fare or venturing on the metro. Affordable, fresh, prefectly prepare french fare with a knowledgable wit staff and somelier.
15 E Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001

In Dupont I like Bistro du Coin. It's loud and boisterous with great bistro cuisine. It makes you feel like you are really in Paris. No reservations though.
Downtown I really like Bistro D'Oc. Cafe du Parc is also good.

Another vote for Bistrot du Coin! It's one of my favorite restaurants.

Besides the Steak Au Poivre the food at Bistro du Coin is forgettable. I would go across town to Bistro Bis.

Thanks for all the responses. We ended up in the DuPont area & went to Bistro Du Coin. We've been to Bistro Bis several times when staying at the George & truly enjoyed it too. Bistro Du Coin met our needs excellently - a fun, loud, kind of "smudgy" time. Great, though overworked server. Food was OK, but the whole dinner experience was a lot of fun & I'd definitely go back if in the area.
