eating in NOLA - some unintentional highlights from my first time...
Interesting how things turn out..I had a HUGE list of restaurants to hit during my 4 days in New Orleans..didn`t even make a dent in my list, which really just means a return trip is forthcoming..that said - a few highlights:
lunch at Butcher - pork is king - and my very good friend..from cubano sammies to pulled pork...I also learned that chow chow is not a dog! Fun beer selection, great service...sweet.
Oysters: at Acme - oddly too big for my liking...a bit chain like in nature, but a really cold arbita beer did the trick. I have to say, my oysters at Iris were significantly better - a bit smaller and the `mignonette`sauce they were served with really enhanced the natural sweetness of the oysters...similarily at Iris, my friend`s bacon wrapped pork tenderloin was amazing!
Homey dinner at Eat - made me feel like I was in my own `hood...loved the byob aspect and the home cooked feeling of the food - had the redfish, which was mild and delicious...also enjoyed tastes of the pork (this was clearly a theme) and the pot roasted chicken..a feel good meal to be sure
OhmygodìmsohungryIcouldchewmyarmoff burgers at Port of Call...the best time to eat a big burger and potato is when one is mildly hungover and starving...but wow, this was one sexy burger...I am still dreaming about it`s medium-rare perfection - simple but oh so good
still hungry dessert to go at a little cafe (Verti something or another)...bread pudding with rum sauce x 2 - weighed more than a small child and almost made us cry it was so damn good.
Honestly, I am devastated that I missed so many places, but the stupid conference had us jumping and gave us limited eating time. I look forward to a return trip and spending some time in the garden district and sampling some more traditional cajun eats. Thanks to all the great new orleans folks who made my first trip memorable - so great to meet people who are so clearly proud of their (great) city!
