Barley Toy Candy
An elderly friend is in the hospital. She mentioned how much she misses Barley Toy candies. (I had never heard of them). She grew up on the East Coast, where this clear sugar candy was popular. Anybody ever heard of these being sold in Toronto? If not, I'll try to order some on line, but it would be a lot more convenient for me to just get some in town...
It's so funny that I saw this post today because I was telling my husband about barley toys on the weekend and he'd never heard of them either (I'm from N.B.). I would like to find them as well. I'm going to try the Nutty Chocolatier tomorrow because they often have stuff like that. I'll let you know if I have any success locating them.
The only place I've ever been able to buy them is at Bulk Barn, oddly enough. They only get them in for the Christmas season and they always sell out. I can't guarantee they have them this year, as it's been about three years since I bought them for my mom (a PEI-er who also grew up with them). You might want to phone around first.
I tried the Bulk Barn on Kingston Rd near Midland today, and they didn't even know what I was talking about. It may vary from one store to the next -- I always bought them at either Scarborough Town Centre or Fairview Mall Bulk Barns. I'm still on a quest, as they are my mother's favourites (next to chicken bones, which I did find at BB today).
there is a store in mississauga
From the isles to the island
56a lakeshore blvd east
that has these candies from nova scotia, they are about $4.50 a bag and are in limited supply and only available for the christmas season not all year.
I don't know if you're still looking for barley toys but the Nutty Chocolatier at Queen and Lee in the Beach had them listed on their board out front yesterday. I didn't have time to stop in and see exactly what they had but it may be worth giving them a call.
