For Those Between-Meal Issues

The busiest food shopping day of the year 2009

There is much talk about whether last minute Christmas shopping is a good idea, but the busiest food shopping day of the year is fast approaching. I try to avoid the day before Thanksgiving grocery runs but I generally have to dash out for one or two items. This year I'm DOOMED!!!! I have to do all my shopping tomorrow. Anyone else in the same gravy boat? Or like with other last minute holiday shopping, do some of my fellow hounds enjoy the last minute rush? To make it up to myself I plan to stay home on black friday and gorge myself on leftover pie and turkey. I'm thinking of wearing a safety helmet when I go on wednesday. Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    1. What I Give Thanks For:
the 24 hour A&P walking distance from my home.... perfect for the 3am cranberry run. Yes, I will be up that early on Thursday. I love to shop when the shelves are being stocked, usually there are only 3 or 4 others besides me and the staff, even the day before T-Day.

I remember not so long ago that you HAD to shop on Wednesday because stores just weren't open on Thanksgiving. Now it's no big deal. The only places I absolutely MUST make sure to get to today are the Mexican market and Trader Joe's.

So I'll probably get up early (not 3 am, more like 7!) for eggs, onions, celery at the local 24 hour megastore!

DH and I took a short stroll last night for a coffee and saw that the A&P was empty. Deserted...there were maybe 5 customers in the whole place. The shelves were well stocked so I picked up a few things I needed like extra tin foil and evaporated milk (for a last minute sweet potato pie request). Now, thankfully, I won't have to go later tonight for anything.

            2. I went last year on Wednesday morning (before 9 AM). The store was practically empty!
I'm going on my way home from work tonight. It will be mobbed, I'm sure.

Alas, I will be at the store tomorrow morning to get cranberries, sweet potatoes & milk. Because I always seem out of milk.....

It's my theory that in my fridge leftover veggies multiply like rabbits... they get their energy from the milk and butter that I am always needing to purchase at the most inconvenient time.

                    2. No fear, I arrived to my SIL's house one year at 9pm on Wed. night, only to find out that my brother was MIA and she had done none of the shopping yet. Didn't even have a turkey. Um, okay, sure, I'd love to go shopping with you! It went very fast b/c the store was almost empty. Good thing we had a carving knife, b/c the tension was so thick in the air that year that you could cut it.

                        1. I went shopping this morning (day before T-day), and it was deserted!!! I was in and out in record time. Plenty of things on the shelves!!!

My family lives in a tiny town where they only have a 24 Hour Wal Mart Super Center, So, on the Eve of holidays about 11PM, we get last minute things. And, it is the strangest bunch of characters you've ever seen mixed with the preppy out of towners. I went to HS in this town, so I can ID the non-natives quickly.

                            1. I survived! The harried store employees were really nice. They hid the eggnog in a special refrigerated unit and I had to ask, and then it seemed like they were out of rutabagas (gasp!) but a guy stocking produce from a huge cart moved like five heavy boxes to unearth a full box of rutabagas just for me. I picked out the smallest one and I swear it has it's own atmosphere and gravitational pull.
