Malzbier in the US
I just got a nice cold malzbier (imported from Germany) from a German shop here in San Diego and was wondering if anybody knows an US brewery who makes Malzbier.

In the US, the product is usually called "Malta". It's brewed by several US breweries (and Carribean breweries, as well- including IIRC a "Guinness" labeled malta). In the Northeast, at least, it's usually found the in the "Ethnic" supermarket aisles -the dusty bottles or six-packs on the bottom shelf of the "Hispanic" shelves- rather than in liquor stores or with beer or other soft drinks. (I usually have an odd bottle or two kicking around in the beer fridge and drink one about every 6 months or so.)
In the East, The Lion brewery in Wilkes-Barre, PA has long had much of it's production capacity taken up with Malta's brewed for other companies, like Goya http://www.tablematters.com/index.php/pantry/pr/prmg The interesting cultural aspect of the product in the US is described in the second story on this site http://www.puertorico-herald.org/issu...
