Desperately Seeking Foie in Pittsburgh

Sadly so many chefs/owners were the target of attacks and damages that I cannot find a single spot serving this much maligned culinary delight anymore. There has to be at least one or two spots left without me having to flee to neighboring states. Anyone?

    1. That's really a tough question, but I'm pretty sure you can still get it at Le Pommier on the South Side. That's the only place that I can think of.

I think I read they don't. Better call and check.

That could be, it's been quite a while since I've been there.

Of course, this is old news. In fact, I think the place is under new ownership, but not new management. I've always enjoyed dining there and never even thought about foie gras.

              • What happened in P-burgh? Sounds like an unfortunate state of affairs.

The protests in Philly lasted about a year, but now there are more places with foie on the menu than ever.

It seems that a few years ago a few protestors picketed a few restaurants and most of them just said "phooey on foie."

                    • Sousa had it on tacos at YoRita not too long ago (also served it a couple times during his guerilla dinners).

The Terrace Room at the Wm. Penn Hotel used to have a short rib ravioli with filet and foie - and it was being served well after all the protests. But didn't see any foie on their current menu. Best guess is a hotel restaurant like that might be your best bet.

                        1. To clarify, yes a while back during all the ire and protests places like Le Pommier were defaced, had doors/locks glued shut, etc. so most everyone gave in. Then, most recently, The City Paper covered a newish restaurant "Toast!" and featured a photo and talk of their foie dish... apparently they ran into issues because when I contacted them they stated they did not server it at all anymore. This was just a few months ago. I replied that even if it wasn't on the menu I'd be prepared to pay for a special request, and they still turned me away.

It is neigh impossible to find around here, and it is a shame. I have an email into Bona Terra, but have not heard back. I'll check with the Terrace Room, never even thought of it. And I'm not looking for tacos, but it is intriguing. Bona Terra's heavy handed flavoring is kind of a turn-off even if they do still serve it but beggar's can't be choosers.

Wow, that's wild. They need to get some of that Philly "go f yourself" attitude and grow some balls!

I went to Toast! on November 23rd and they had a foie gras appetizer - miniscule portions and not sure of the price, but looked really good (my friend got it). Call ahead, though, they're menu changes daily.

I had it at Bona Terra, but that was over a year ago.

                                      • Was at Nine on Nine tonight. There was a foie gras panna cotta on the menu as a warm appetizer. Unfortunately they didn't have it tonight as we would've been all over it. If you really need a fix, might want to call them and see if they're serving it.
