Super Chef Battle

Looks like fun. Bobby Flay and White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford against Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse in Washington DC. Sounds like the First Lady may be a guest judge or at least make an appearance.

    1. I don't think its the FLOTUS.. its Malia and her sister.. and the secret ingredient will be sea urchin.

        1. re: grant.cook

I initially thought it might be the FLOTUS but now, in thinking it through, I'm doubtful, security being what it is these days.
My vote for secret ingredient is White House honey.

The special guest and the secret ingredient have been reported by CNBC here: http://www.cnbc.com/id/33620751

(I don't want to spoil it by naming them, for those who want to be surprised.

I'm really looking forward to hearing what the guest-*chef*-judge has to say about the offerings. However, given what the five dishes are supposed to represent, I think the choice of two of the guest judges is curious. I'm not sure whether they would be as qualified as some other individuals to assess whether the dishes meet the challenge. (I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has chosen not to look at the article, so I hope you can understand what I'm trying to convey.)

HA! I didn't notice that on my first reading, but, yes, odd choices, indeed.

Glad to know I'm not alone in my thinking. No disrespect meant to the judges and their respective accomplishments, of course.

                  • I enjoyed the battle. Didn't know anything about Chef Comerford until now. Loved the idea of the "chowder" with broccoli and lemongrass. And the idea of picking fresh veggies from a garden and making them the secret ingredient was wonderful. Extra props that it was the White House garden!

                      1. What's with AB??? Is it me.. He really didn't look good.

This has been discussed on the internet on various sites. He lost a whole bunch of weight last year and claims he's turned over a new leaf about healthful eating or something, but if you ask me, he just looks more and more unhealthy each time I see him.

                              1. re: rockandroller1

According to an episode of Good Eats aired on 1/4/2010, AB says he's lost 50 lbs. He presented his eating plan on the episode. Most of it seemed reasonably sensible to me.

I guess I haven't watched his show in a year or more. I think its great that he is eating healthfully, it's nice when people set a good example on eating healthfully (talking to you Emeril).

Usually you look better when you lose weight? Maybe its the head of thinning hair, the combo doesn't look good. Cut that thing short, it'll look much better. I should know.

                                  2. There's a thread on this already cooking, with Spoilers... http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/678022

                                      1. i might of missed the reason why have the answer to my question, but if so I missed it.
Why or how did Bobby F, come to pair up with Chef Comerford? I'd thing her skills would by far outshine the other chefs, even Bobby Flay. I mean I can't imagine a more tough resume, she must be an awesome chef, and to serve so many Presidents, sheesh!
Darn I missed it, I'm sure it will run again but I was hoping to catch it. The comments posted here throughout this thread really have me curious now.

                                          1. re: chef chicklet

I missed the begining too, but he's positioned himself as the most 'all american' chef. He's got his restaurant Bar Americain, book Bold American Flavors. So it does make sense it that way.
