So this Wed. is my birthday....but we will have just moved on Tuesday, and I am working Wed., so we will be tired! We will be renting an apartment in Jenkintown (until we find a house to buy in Glenside), and want to stay pretty local. I imagine we'll be too tired and barely out of boxes to do anything fancy, so just looking for a place where you really recommend the food - ethnic foods of all kinds always good, tho' doesn't have to be. And for now, we are not eating white sugar or flour, so it would need to be somewhere where that wouldn't be too difficult to work with. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

How about Tiffin's new restaurant in Elkins Park? Wonderful indian food, and would definitely enable you to avoid the white flour and sugar.

Tiffin! It's in Elkins Park Square, the complex at the corner of Old York Road and Church, a very short ride down OYR from Jenkintown. We ate there the other day, it was delicious, nice casual atmosphere, and will easily meet your dietary needs.

Right in Jenkintown, there really isn't much with great food. You could get the gluten-free pizza crust at Jules Thin Crust. I think it's yummy, but probably even more casual than you want.

Thanks for the replies. Tiffin is a great suggestion - when we lived in the city, we frequently got takeout from the Girard Ave. location, and loved it. We're planning on Jules for Tues. night, the night of the move. We've only been there once but did like that whole wheat crust.

I meant to report back. We've since had Tiffin takeout, and also have really enjoyed the whole wheat crust pizza at Jules, but the night of my birthday I decided I wan't in the mood for Indian, or to get back in the car once I got home from work. So we walked the few blocks into town and ate at Mirna's. Really enjoyed it; brought a nice bottle of wine, I had a shrimp dish that I enjoyed very much, and my husband enjoyed his chicken dish.

So funny, when I clicked on this thread to recommend Mirna's I saw it was several weeks old. Glad you ended up there and enjoyed it! We've lived in Jenkintown for 11 years and Mirna's is our go-to spot for nice local dining that isn't too expensive. It was even more convenient when the state store was across the street! I'll miss the convenience of walking to Mirna's when we move over to NW Philly in the spring.
