What happened to the Food Down Under recipe site?
Does anyone know what happened to www.fooddownunder.com? I get one of those "buy this site" pages, which doesn't look good.
Food Down Under was my first choice for recipe searches, all sorts of great recipes from around the world and still simply non-commercial.

It looks like the site registration expired on Nov 15, 2009.

In doing a bit of research, looks like someone here in the U.S. (a registration service) snapped it up on 11/17/09.

Is this the generic material you're getting?

I just tried to get onto the website and found the same thing. I am heartbroken. I loved it and used it a lot.

Great shame - food down under was my favourite. Search by Country, ingredients, or recipe name. If they register a new name and continue with the database please let me know it

Here's a link from the Wayback Machine from the last update in July 2008 - http://web.archive.org/web/2008072206...
It does take awhile to load a link, but at least recipes are still available.

Thanks Linda! I found Food Down Under way back in the late '90s and was disappointed to hear it was kaput. BTW: Thanks for the Wayback archive too... I didn't know about it.

I too loved using fooddownunder and was angry when it was gone I was going to get more recipes and all of the sudden it was gone

Thanks Linda!
Maybe there's a way to resurrect to site? I hope so.

I wonder if there is a way to contact the original site owner?
I'd be willing to finance a resurection of the site

Alan at the bottom of the site the bogus site there is a link saying the domain is available to buy but how to get in touch with the previous site owner has so far proved fruitless

I am so disapointed tha the site wasnt able to stay up, perhaps the previous website owner can find a vene for the recipies soon, before I start to have withdrawls!!!

Gutted! This has been one of my main recipe resources for years! Thanks for the link Linda. Does anyone know whose this site was? Maybe they'd appreciate seeing the support they have!

Yes, thanks very much Linda! There is light amidst the present general darkness.

Linda - thank you, thank you SO much! I had my heart set on Parsnip pierogies for the holidays and that is where that recipe lives. I would not have known how to access it.

I'm very glad that the Wayback Machine helped you out. It's not perfect, but for a site that had been around for awhile, it is very useful for winnowing out some things.

I've had trouble getting to some of the recipes linked. Does anyone know if all the links still work?
I think it's only going to be as good as the spiders scraping the web having caught and cached the postings on the site. So yes, it's quite possible that some of the recipes might not have been saved by the Wayback Machine.

Will this work?
http://www.fooddownunder.com/

todao, no - that's just a placeholder put there by the domain site owner after the registration expiration. The only way to get anything is from the Wayback Machine link I posted above.

Hopefully it will be back with a new domain name and if anyone did snap it up dream on you'll will remain the poor slob that you are. Here are some alternative sites that I use but they don't replace our so loved fooddownunder!

The site is at the new archived website however it appears that not all recipie links work and the owner has put a message asking for donations (which is reasonable!) since it is a 1 man show and he does not want to go the advertising route. Some of the recipies seem to be blocked to avoid crawling (?). So you can still probably find what you need but do consider donating a little bit so we can get this incredible site back up!

I would be careful about making donations. That link is under the original fooddownunder.com domain and links to a fooddownunder.com email. Neither of those would reach the original owner if the domain has been bought up by another company. You would be donating to the wrong place.
Does anyone know who the original owner was so that they can be approached directly to bring back the database?

The domain expired, but the original domain owners or another enterprising party have created a new site - fooddownunder.info - and are moving the recipes from the original site to this one. Since there were over 250,000 recipes on the original site, you can appreciate that this will take time. http://fooddownunder.info/
