Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale

Green Market Delray Beach

I have been meaning to go for the past few months now that the location has changed and I need to say it is disappointing following this morning's visit.
No more than a handful of stalls, 3 or 4 selling produce, one selling bread (not very special though the loaves look nice I think Publix bread is better), a mozzarella stall, a dog treats stall, a dog clothes stall (yes!), an orchid stall, fish, soaps and candles, and a couple of craft type stalls, a bottled sauce stall and that was it. Nice atmosphere and friendly but really nothing to buy which is such a shame because I prefer to give my money to local producers but if there is nothing to go back for it's kind of pointless.

    1. smartie - we're going out to Bedner's on SR 7 between Atlantic Ave and Boynton Beach Blvd. (http://bedners.com/) this morning. It's just a farm stand now but they're building their own produce market which should open sometime in January.

They're a local farming family and they had a big write-up recently in both the Sun-Sentinel and Palm Beach Post. I bought some romaine from them when they set up a table at FAU and it was very good.

Their Strawberry & Tomato You Pick will open in mid-December.

I'm going to go check out Bedner's this weekend. I just got an email from them saying the Strawberry pick-em is now open, and they also have "just-picked romaine, spinach, tomatoes, string beans, peppers, squash and other farm-fresh produce."

We just left Bedners. It was a little too rainy for us to go picking strawberries but the veggies are great today. The corn, romaine, collards, spinach, and green beans are all good and if you need poblano peppers, they're the best I've seen in a long time

Oh, and they're giving out large samples of their homemade strawberry ice cream.

                2. too early for local producers to have much of anything. very hot summer (almost nothing grows well) and short days now. Most green markets are buying their produce from other states to sell here. Real local markets will start to have decent produce in January.

                    1. Smartie, I'm not sure what you are looking for.

I was there Saturday morning and if by a "handful" of stands you mean, oh, about 20, well I would say that's not too shabby. 3 or 4 have a great variety of produce, fresh squeezed OJ, one specializes in ALL organic.

I can get a bundle of fresh picked basil for about 2 bucks that will have you set in Pesto for life. I can get vine grown tomatos. Later in season there will be heirloom tomatoes right from West Boynton Beach (Green Cay Farm).

There's also a seafood vendor, a hand-made pasta vendor and there was also a BBQ truck. The bread company which you dissed is the FANTASTIC Old Schoolhouse Bread Company which makes an incredible multigrain loaf and lots of other goodies.

I've known Lori, who runs this, for about 10 years now, and she works very hard to get great vendors. Please make some specific suggestions and I"ll be glad to pass them along to her.
