Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Mexico (including Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta)

Morelia and one little place in San Miguel de Allende

I used to go to Mexico often and I have spent a lot of time in Morelia and the surrounding areas. I thought I would post some of my favorite places and would love to hear if anyone on this board has been to them recently. I would love to hear how they are doing.

Morelia: Fonda Mercedes - beautiful setting and excellent upscale food.
Hamburger stands by Correos or Seguros (El Chino). Loved the hashbrowns and bacon on the burger with some chiles toreados on the side.

In San Miguel de Allende, there was a little restaurant with a comida corrida prepared by a French woman. It was behind a bookstore called Tecolote and I think the restaurant was called La Parroquia, but i am not sure. This was really one of my favorite places to eat and I felt the best "find" in all of Mexico.

    1. Well...I think the key to your post is 'used to...'.

I live in Morelia, write about food and other cultural areas, and try to keep up with the best food in town. While Fonda las Mercedes still has the over-the-top ambiance you remember, the food isn't what it used to be. There are other places in town with far better kitchens. The #1 best restaurant in Morelia is currently Restaurante LU, at the Hotel Best Western Casino. Imagine that! The Casino's restaurant used to be mediocre at best, but now--wowzer! And IMHO, Morelia's best hamburger is at Hamburguesas Richards, on Morelos Sur. The hamburgers are juicy and delicious, the fries are hand-cut and fried to your taste (I like mine bien dorado--twice fried), and the ambiance is purely old-time Mexican.

There are other terrific culinary surprises in Morelia. Come back and try some!

I'll second Cristina on Hamburguesas Richard's. I like to get two, no catsup, mustard on the side, an order of papas fritas, and a cool, soothing horchata.

I can't handle but a little bite or two of the chiles toreados served on the side.
