How to tip at La Pergola in Rome?

My wife and daughter surprized me back in September with a trip to Rome for my 50th BDay.

I've read enough posts to get the hang of tipping in the "normal" Italian manner but would love suggestions for tipping for the reservation we have next Friday at La Pergola.

I was a professional waiter half of my adult life and tend to overtip no matter what.

If anyone has an "appropriate and reasonable" suggestion for La Pergola, I would appreciate it. I suspect we will probably each do the 7 course at $E 175 each and then maybe E$200 for wine/water - Let's say 700-800 euros total tab.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    1. I used to overtip in Italy, and then luckily before my last trip there I saw a thread earlier this year which had a question in it about tipping, and a response from Maureen Fant, who I would consider to be the ultimate expert on this board, and the protocol was 5, 10 or 20 euros for 2 people, not depending on the total cost or any percentages, but on the level of restaurant. The place you are referring is obviously in the top category, so I would go with 20 euros (30 if there will be 3 of you).

I am blushing! I'd just add that I would go higher at La Pergola and that category under certain circumstances -- you had a lot of different wines or a lot of special treatment or something of the sort. And if at all possible leave the tip in cash. Some places may say they can't put the tip on the credit card, and you should believe them. You cannot imagine the fiscal difficulties, rules, etc., people live with.
