Recipes for dry mix gifts?

owen_meany Nov 20, 2009 05:16 AM

You know those gifts where you give someone a jar of layered items (flour, sugar, chips for cookies, for example) + a recipe for a gift? Does anyone have any knock out recipes for stuff like that? I'm into both sweet and savory.

TIA, Sara

Hi Owen.....My go-to holiday gift in a jar is great for last-minute gift giving. The hostess gift for an unexpected party invitation, a reciprical gift when someone gives you a present you weren't expecting, etc. I buy a case of wide-mouthed canning jars, run them through the dishwasher and dry well. Mix the first three ingredients well and place in each jar. Then fill all jars with remaining ingredients, one at a time, as follows:

    Friendship Brownies

    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
    1/3 cup cocoa
    1/2 cup vanilla chips
1/2 cup real semisweet chocolate chips
    1/2 cup walnuts
    2/3 cup granulated sugar

Using pinking shears, cut holiday fabric in a circle two inches larger than jar lids. Cover each jar with a lid and then secure the fabric by screwing on the ring of each jar. Attach a little card with a hole in one upper corner, tied in a bow around each jar ring with raffia, stating the following:

    Friendship Brownie Mix

Combine contents of this jar with 3 large eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla extract and 2/3 cup vegetable oil. Pour into greased 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes. Prepared with love from our family to yours.
