Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Best place to get a turkey in the bay? Maybe even Sacramento or Yolo county?

I'm going to my father's house for thanksgiving, and I want to make sure we get a good bird. Anybody know of the best place to get something that's better than a butterball? I like in San Francisco, he lives in Vacavile, so anywhere close to those places is doable.

    1. Go for Diestel birds - I get mine at Whole Foods. I have also gotten the "Andronico's Signature bird" at, well, Andronicos and had good success. In Vacaville, check out Nugget - I know they have great beef, haven't purchased poultry, but it's worth a look. Good luck!

Raley's/Nob Hill also has Diestel birds, much cheaper than Whole Foods ($2.19/lb). Other premium birds people swear by are Mary's and Willie Bird. Bi-Rite carries those, I believe. If you scroll down the board there are several discussions about what turkeys to buy and where.

I'm a fan of Diestel. There's a Raley's right off 80 on the way to Vallejo at the San Pablo Dam Road exit ... quick on and off. However, I'd call the store and reserve. Last year the fresh turkey's went fast.

                2. I dunno if you're familiar with the search feature yet, but here's a start. There are some threads from last year mixed in toward the top, but sorting by date pulled up more unrelated threads.
