Epicure Imports Warehouse - Open This Weekend
Epicure Imports Warehouse is open to the public this coming weekend:
Friday, November 20, from 1:30pm to 6:00pm
Saturday, November 21, from 9:30am to 2:00pm
They are a wholesale warehouse that opens to the public a few times a year.
They carry a large selection of imported wines, cheeses, chocolates, olive oils, vinegars, spices, baking supplies, and lots of things I am forgetting to mention.
Some of their items can be found elsewhere and some of their prices are not the cheapest around; still, it is a lot of fun to shop the aisles and the cheese room!

I went to one a couple of months ago, and was a bit underwhelmed. I was not shopping for cheeses or chocolates, and did not look at them, yet the oils and vinegars and wines and seasonings were nothing overly special, and the lack of prices made comparison shopping a bit more difficult than I anticipated. They have a printed list when you walk in that can help, yet not totally either.

Oh...sorry, Carter, to hear about your lack of enthusiasm. The "blind" shopping certainly makes it a different kind of experience. They do carry some items that are not easily available elsewhere, and it is those items that bring us back almost every time they are open. Specifically, we find some of their cheeses to be superior. I am not a baker, but they appear to have some good items for baking as well.
Los Angeles is full of specialty markets, so we are quite spoiled when it comes to having deliciousness easily available to us. If you don't live too far from Epicure Imports and you don't have to spend a day on the freeways to get there, then Epicure Imports is a good stop.

re: liu
I agree that it's kinda fun not to know what you'll find. I'm still working on a huge bag of porchini powder I got at Easter time. Didn't have any idea I wanted that when I walked in.
The charcuterie is great and the samples are terrific.
I've gotten some lovely oils and vinegars. And there's always a huge assortment of truffles, truffle oils and truffle butters.

hi liu,
we've been meaning to make the almost 50-mile trek. thanks for the reminder- we did today. nothing like picking up things not knowing how much they cost! good advice about only getting things we haven't seen, say at trader joe's. much as we love the costco taste tests, this one takes the cake. now on their email list.

re: rainey
rainey, I am sorry to hear about your difficulty with their email list.
As I suggested to jacknhedy, give them a call and request email notification once again.
They consistently continue to send me notification emails at least a week in advance of any public openings. It might seem a little difficult to get on their list, but once you are on, I think it might be even more difficult to get off!

re: jacknhedy
Hi, jacknhedy!
Ah, yes! It's exactly like shopping in the dark...no prices to be found! But they are always very nice -- if also a little inefficient! -- about looking up any item you might bring to them. For us, it is all about the fun and the cheese room. We have found some really wonderful cheeses there that I have purchased at every visit...never to be disappointed!
I am glad that you enjoyed the experience. Call them at #818.985-9800 to be sure that you are on their email list. Their next public opening -- and final for the year -- is scheduled for December 18 and 19, 2009. When you call them, you might wish to confirm these dates.
