Puzzling about where to post after site changes

jen kalb Nov 17, 2009 06:20 PM

I normally access the site through Hot Posts feature. If I want to add remarks on a restaurant to a recent thread, what is the best way of doing that? these days when I do a search of a restaurant name it will take me to a restaurant page, not the recent discussion threads on Chowhound forums. I would prefer to add my comments to a discussion thread rather than on a static restaurant page.

Second the search logic seems to have become less intuitive recently (or rather than and). Maybe I am imagining this but it generates fewer relevant result in both columns. I find myself going up to the google box and searching the site there. Its particularly vexing finding older posts - the righthand search box used to snag them but no more. Has there been a change in logic/engine?

thanks

To show you how confused this can get, I've been posting here for 5 years and I have no idea where Hot Posts is these days. In the Chowhound Index, there's a link to "My Unread Posts/HotPosts". Is that how you get to what used to be the old Hot Posts? That page is topped by "Your Unread Posts for All of Chowhound" and doesn't say "Hot Posts". But I guess that's it? I jyst find it easier to go to "My Posts" and then to the five or six boards I find most interesting.

I have http://www.chow.com/new_posts/show bookmarked and honestly don't know how to get to it the normal way. let me see if I can figure it out....

Yeah, OK. On the "CHOWHOUND" dropdown menu with the list of all the boards, the very first option is "My Unread Posts/HotPosts"

I don't use the Hot Posts because it brings up every, single post for every single board. But I do use search and have found out that when I put in a restaurant name the first window has 3 tabs at the top. 1st is All Results, 2nd is Boards, 3rd is Restaurants & Bars. The search shows all the restaurants first, but if you hit the Boards tab then it gives you just topics that have that restaurant in it. When you choose that you will see that at the top it gives you choices about what board you want, date range, user name, etc. I find it works much better than it used to and have found things very easily.

      Hope this helps you.

Hot Posts defaults to every single post for every single board, but all you need to do is click "Switch board" and then choose the board you want from the navigational dropdown

Yes, I found that out after I posted my reply to Jen. It was a real "duh" moment for me!

well, I always easily navigate around among the hotposts boards. Its always been a nuisance (since the new structure) to post other than a reply to a visible post since it involves exiting and reintering through the Chowhound Boards pulldown to find older posts or initiate a new post but ok.

I had had a problem seemingly using search to find the appropriate recent thread to add my post to. the system seemed to prefer my adding a review to the Restaurant section of the site. but now I see I can do it. if I am more patient

I am still concerned about the search feature and its lack of intelligence and utility recently.
