What's a good "show off" type restaurant..

What's a good "show off" that i know about good restaurants type restaurant that I can take my sister too.. of course i'll credit my fellow chowhounders!

maybe somewhere downtownish? Something with cool atmosphere would be ideal too.. my sister is all about the atmosphere where I am all about the food!

  1. Do you mean "show off" as in decor or as in trendy scene?

im guessing op is looking for something "hip." a "hot spot"

hmm that's actually a good question.. kinda all of those things.. hip, hot spot, decor.. just like a really good restaurant that hits all those spots and certainly good food! a type of restaurant you take people to impress them on your restaurant choosing capability :)

lol.. basically i want to find a cool restaurant for her to be wowed! and then therefore in the future trust my restaurant suggestions in the future! lol..

          any certain cuisine?
I'd go to momofuko if you can score a resie.

Only Ko takes reservations, unless you are ordering the fried chicken dinner of the bo ssam, and Ko isn't really hip or trendy.

          2. re: eelinthecity

I have found (IMHO) that "hip, trendy, hot spots" are not exactly great food restaurants.

      2. If you can get a reservation, *everything's* right about Eleven Madison Park.

If you want to take a gamble, a reservation at The Four Seasons may yield some celebrity-sighting... but don't count on it.

If you can possibly secure a reservation at Minetta Tavern, that's one of the most on-fire places right now...

I'm not sure exactly what the OP means by "atmosphere." Does that mean a beautiful room? Obviously Eleven Madison Park has that. But if she's looking for more of a "scene" then maybe neither Four Seasons or EMP would work.

Maybe Scarpetta? It's a nice room, and the food's excellent. Plus it's so close to the meatpacking district it's often full of The Beautiful People.

Yeah i have to agree with egit, i don't know if 4-star and "hip" can ever go together.

I'd throw out Freeman's, The Standard Grill, and Joseph Leonard.

        2. Locanda Verde, The Standard, Stanton Social and Minetta Tavern

These are all pretty "scen-y" but the food is quite good and reliable.

              1. Some ideas:

-take her to Hearth and try to get seats at the pass thru from the kitchen.
-take her to Degustation and get similar seats
-figure out how to get into Ko
-figure out how to get into Minetta Tavern
-lots of trendy E.Village Italian places reviewed on this board. We like Lavagna and Supper but we're older and less trendy/hip (as if you couldnt tell)

All these have a good vibe/atmosphere without sacrificing food.
