Bagby's Pizza in Baltimore

  • 2

This is a new pizza/pasta/sandwich/salad place across Fleet Street from Whole Foods.

They had a coupon special on the web page offering a small Cheese pizza, or any of their pastas or salads with the purchase of a large (14") pizza and a drink. Sounded good to me, and a nice way to try out two aspects of their menu, so I went with the Tomato Basil Pizza (with fresh moz - AKA a Margherita Pizza) and the wild mushroom penne.

The past was very nice - properly cooked penne, with mushrooms, small-dice-sized slices of asparagus, plenty of garlic and decent olive oil. A nice dish, simple combination, done correctly. Score one for Bagby's

The pizza was also quite nice. Good fresh moz, a good helping of a chiffonade of fresh basil, a nice tomato puree, and remarkably thin but sturdy crust. When I say "thin" I mean almost like the card stock used to print a business card - thinner than your average cracker, and yet still crisp, but without the "soda cracker" taste that is characteristic of a whole sub-genre of the pizza world, especially in the Midwest. I'd say it's definitely worth a return visit for further investigation of their other toppings. Price points appeared to be very similar to those at Iggie's, to give a point of reference. Or look up the menu on their web site if you want specific price info.

For my personal taste, Bagby's will not knock Iggie's Joe Squared, Matthew's or Coal Fire off the top of my current local pizza preference list, but it's good enough that if I lived closer to Bagby's than any of my other faves, I might find myself choosing to stay local at least some of the time. I wouldn't regularly drive past any of the others to go to Bagby's but it's a place I would definitely go to at least once in a while. And of course, pizza preferences being very different from person to person, this might displace one or more of my favorites from somebody's else's list.

Definitely worth a try for those who live nearby, and at least one visit to check them out for pizza fans who don't live so close. They just might be your idea of the perfect pizza. If the pasta is any indication the other menu items besides the pizza are also worth exploring. Perhaps others can fill in details and opinions on that portion of the menu

  1. We've been to Bagby twice now and enjoyed four pizzas between us. The cheeses are especially nice and I loved the roasted artichoke hearts with the soft goat cheese.

They are BYOB and Bin 604 is right across the street.

    1. Oh, saw the coupon. Wonder what the Casheer does there?
