Advice needed along DC red line

I will be meeting an old college friend for dinner. It will be the 1st time we will be getting together in years, so I want to find a place with great food where we will be able to really talk. She'll be in DC for a conference (staying near Dupont) and I'll be coming in via Union Station, so I thought a place on the red line would make sense. Close to Union would be ideal, but all the places I checked out were so, so expensive. Any suggestions would be great!

By the Dupont Metro (north), I would suggest Sette (pizza and pasta)
Cleveland Park: Bardeo, Ardeo, Nam Viet, and Dino are all excellent

There are a lot of excellent, cheap choices in Wheaton, within easy walking distance of the Metro. Nava Thai would be my top pick, followed by Ruan Thai. (Nava Thai is a more attractive-looking place.) Wheaton is a great destination if food quality and low price are more important than ambiance.

What kind of food do you both like? There are a great deal of options on the red line. My quick thought would be Jaleo or Zaytinya in Chinatown for tapas.
