Restaurant listings: general & specific issues
Hi: I went into the San Diego restaurant list and have been adding little reviews of some of my favorite spots. I noticed that Market Restaurant + Bar is incorrectly sited in San Ysidro near the Mexican Border; it is actually in Del Mar, about 40 minutes north. And the address is wrong too.
And is there a way to add hours and other info to the restaurant listings that don't contain this info?
How does one add a new listing for a favorite restaurant?
Thanks,
M

The Chow restaurant database is lousy with bum information, most of it from an outside data provider whose listings were apparently dumped onto this site with minimal (if any) screening by human beings. The result is that the restaurant records are rife with duplication and factual errors of all kinds (which the site cordially invites us users to fix for free!).
If you'd like to pitch in and you're not able to edit Chow restaurant records, drop a post on this thread and they'll set you up ... http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/655867

We've set you up with access to edit the restaurant listings, although you might have to log out and then back in to get it to work.
To add a new restaurant,
Open a new window, then go to this url: http://search.chow.com/search?query=a...
and add from the link at the bottom of that page that says "Don't see the restaurant you are looking for? Add a Restaurant or Bar" You can click on "Add a Restaurant or Bar" to add a new Restaurant page.
After you add the page, it will take 5-10 minutes for your new restaurant to appear as a selection in the "link to a place' search.

Ok, cool thanks! Now... how do we get the photos I've uploaded to some of the reviews to appear on my photo page. Not as pressing, but just wondering since Ive got lots to share.
Thanks, Maria

The way it's currently set up, none of your activity on the Restaurants section of the site ties in to your profile page. Reviews and photos you add there won't show up on your activity or photo pages.
If you'd like to contribute reviews and have both the reviews and photos available through your profile as well as appear on a particular restaurant page, the best way to do it is to navigate to the correct geographical board at http://chowhound.chow.com/boards. Click on "Add new post" and, as you are making the post, click on the box in front of "This is a review of a specific restaurant". You'll be prompted to enter the name of a restaurant (although, a brand new restaurant won't be in the database) as well as a star rating, if you choose. Be sure to mention the name of the restaurant in the title of he post as well.
When you finish your review, click "Add New Topic". Your post will appear on that board, along with a link and map on the upper right hand side of the page. If you click on that link, you'll see the restaurant page and your review. Other posters will be able to respond to your post on the discussion boards, so be sure to check back there if you'd like to engage with others on your topic.

So the "add new topic" button feeding "reviews" to the message boards has been enabled? Great, now we have the WORST of both worlds.

You've got it confused. Adding new topics to the message boards, as described above, will feed "reviews" to the Restaurant database, assuming you've clicked "This is a review of a specific restaurant", in addition to being available as discussion board topics.

Thanks, yes, I read that wrong. Can you tell I'm concerned about a bunch of micro-posts feeding from the R&B interface to the boards? Previously Chow HQ had said that it would wait and see before enabling that feature, and I hope that it will be looked at carefully before letting it happen.
I'll mention that during I've been experimenting with using the "review of a specific restaurant" check-off when posting on the boards. Sometimes it takes, but mostly it doesn't. During this site speed slow-down recently, I'll get the spinning when it looks like my message won't post. When I refresh, it's there, but won't have fed to the R&B page. Here's one example, and for this one I tried to link to the restaurant in my reply, but that didn't take either even after a couple days.

I added a restaurant: Myanmar in Falls Church, Virginia. But the listing reads as Virgin Islands. I went back to see if I made a mistake, and it was indeed Virginia. I reselected Virginia and saved, but the listing still comes out as Virgin Islands.

We see what you mean, assuming this record is the one you created http://www.chow.com/restaurants/912956/myanmar
Not speaking to the Virgin Islands problem, but there actually was already a record for that restaurant, at http://www.chow.com/restaurants/4708/...
Did you not find that listing when you searched?
Normally, we'd combine the two records but we're going to leave both for now so someone on the Engineering team can take a look. It definitely does say "Virginia" on the State, and the map shows in the correct location, so it's definitely odd that it's showing as "VI" and not "VA".

The software prioritizes country codes over state codes, so this is similar to the CA = California, CA=Canada issue. Editing the record to say Virginia afterwards is one option. Including a country code like US or USA on the address when you add it is another.

Greetings, I posted a review for District Modern Japanese Bistro
URL: http://www.chow.com/restaurants/91291...
My review shows 4 times, because the post button did not give me any feedback to say that it posted. Can someone please remove the duplicate reviews.
Also, I couldn't add a photo, because the browse button didn't work. FYI, I use Visa SP1 with IE7.
Cheers,

We've removed the three duplicate reviews.
For the photos, are you saying that you see the turquoise link that says "ADD ONE NOW!" below "NO PHOTOS YET" but when you click it nothing happens?
