Santa Monica Seafood Rest in peace.

I wanted to have cracked Dungeness crab for a first course last night. I went, as I have often in the past, to Santa Monica Seafood. They only had previously frozen/thawed crabs. When I explained my surprise to the fishmonger, he said that they rarely had they fresh. He assured me that they were just as good, etc. He was not truthful. The crab was embarrassing. It was mushy, had little taste, and was watery. It was the worst crab I have ever had. It was also $23 a crab.

If I would have had the time, I would have gone to 99 Ranch Market and cooked it myself.

When I stated to write this, I noticed the highly critical reviews posted here of SMS. I wish that I would have checked the reviews first. Like I said, it was an embarrassment.

Oh, and they did have sardines ..... at $12 a pound.

  1. Sorry you had to put yourself through that from both an emotional and financial standpoint.
I also went through it many, many months ago, sadly.

    1. I hate to sound like such a mean person but when I first saw your subject line, my heart actually leapt at the thought that SMS was actually closing due to their general crappiness. I actually thought, "good riddance!"

But I guess I jumped the gun on that one. Sorry about your nasty crabs (no double entendre intended).

I know! I thought the same thing, and I try to be NICE, but it's just that I am ANGRY not to have the resource that SMSF used to be. I hardly eat fresh fish anymore, and we used to shop at SMSF at least once if not twice a week.

      2. You can order fresh dungeness crab from Seattle and it will be here in 24 hours. I think the place...which is at Pike Place Pure Fish....or City Fish. It's always amazing....and fresh...and really not all that expensive considering what folks here charge.....

        1. I had sardines from the SMS in Costa Mesa about 2 weeks ago, and they were very good ! Very fresh and tasty, I was very happy to see them there. The fellow behind the counter was great, he asked and was happy to clean them for me. I just grilled them with a little salt and pepper.

SMS in Santa Monica often had them in the fall. However, they were $4 a pound which is fair for bait fish. Saturday they were $12 which is insane.

insane indeed. they're usually $2-$3 at marukai or mitsuwa.
