Staying 1 night in east St. Louis, looking for a good meal
Next weekend I'm doing a road trip from Asheville, NC to Lincoln, NE. After our first day of driving, we'll be around the St. Louis area. I'd love to eat something delicious that is (somewhat) close to to highway 64. Any ideas? We love all kinds of food, and really appreciate any ideas you might have. Nothing too fancy, since we might look a little rough from 9-10hrs. in the car.

Might be a little out of your way, but the place I would suggest is another German restaurant, Dreamland Palace in Waterloo, IL (Foster Pond, IL). I am a vegan and I know that the vegetable soup and most of the items on their salad bar are vegan. The things that are not are suitable for a vegetarian. Entree wise I would go with the potato pancakes for your boyfriend, which are vegetarian without the gravy. They contain eggs. For you I would try the weinerschnitzel. It is my husband's favorite and I have to say that it looks very good! Nice atmosphere and the owners are wonderful people. It is our favorite place and we had our wedding reception there in July. Our first date was there, too, come to think of it. Their website is DreamlandPalace.net. Hope that helps!

A great breakfast/luncj/dinner spot is in New Baden, IL right off I-64 about a mile or so east right in town. New Baden is roughly 30 miles east of St. Louis. and 1 exit before the Mascoutah exit where Roemer Topf is located. The place is called Good Ol' Days and their breakfast is great. My fav is the one of the Crock's...Biscuits covered with American Fries in a stoneware bowl covered w/ eggs, cheese, and gravy..Mmmm..a belly buster.

A few miles south of I-64 is the Roemer Topf, a nice German restaurant. I like the food and I like the fact that they do not put a lot of kitsch on the walls like cuckoo clocks.
They are in a golf course clubhouse. In Mascoutah IL. http://www.roemertopfllc.com/
