11/09 Gitlo's Dim Sum : Don't Bother
After a very good CH lunch at YoMa yesterday, we pulled over at the 'Dim Sum Bakery' sign to explore. (In my head,"wow, not having to deal w/ chinatown parking and lines on wkends; now wouldn't that be great". Well, 11 take out items later, the word is 'Not.'
The only excellent thing we had was the Sweet Potato Puffs; delicate Chinese versions of sfogliadele-like flaky lard pastry wrapped around a just-sweet-enough sweet potato filling. The red bean and taro (smoothie like) drink- was a great combo of 2 of my fav sweet savory flavors.
'Very good' was the char siu bao- steamed buns with a superior dark brown (not the usual bright red)pork filling. I wish they would make big versions and bake them.
.
'Pretty good' were the Shrimp hargow ,and the Cantonese shrimp pork chive dumplings.
Not worth ordering were the: Seaweed shrimp shiu mai;(tough) ; Bean curd skin shrimp rolls (tough);Taro spring rolls(none of the purported flavors); the lomein special (no sauce; no flavor ); Black bean pork spareribs over rice(tough; definitely not ' falling off the bone' as promised by the staffperson.
Maybe i'd stop by to get those 2 first excellent items, but otherwise I wouldn't bother going here again.

as this was a regular spot for me and The Kid when they first opened i've been disheartened to read of the downhill slide since the original chef left.
but i am in love with the Bon Chon chicken across the street at Privus, i just wished they were open before 5pm.

re: opinionatedchef
all i can say is that it is the Best Fried Chicken i've ever had.
super crispy/crunchy, delightful flavor, two sauces (garlic and spicy) that are so good i can't decide so i get both.this link is not for Privus but it may give you more detail:
