Sundial Gardens (Higganum, CT): Special Teas and German Specialties

  • 0

I've not seen Sundial Gardens mentioned on this board, and as it's a local treasure, I wanted to share it--especially with the holiday season approaching.

It's currently (for fall) open weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. After Thanksgiving, they'll be open daily (except Mondays and Tuesdays)--same hours.

I've been visiting this store for years--all the way back to when I first began to appreciate loose leaf tea vs. "tea dust." Ragna Tischler-Goddard possesses a wealth of knowledge, appreciation and passion for fine teas and fine foods, particularly such treats as Niederegger Marzipan from Lübeck, Germany, chocolates filled with pear brandy ("Good for digestion," she explains) and several new Italian specialty items. Her husband Tom is a pastry chef and offers classes from time to time. They stock an assortment of Yixing teapots and cups among other beautiful tea accessories.

Sundial Gardens is the only source I know of for some truly special teas. Two of my personal favorites:

IMPERIAL VELVET OOLONG
"A very special oolong from China's Wuji Shan region of Fujian Province."
This is the most exquisite tea I have ever tasted. It is currently sold out and due back in the store next weekend.

BLUE SPRING OOLONG
I have enjoyed three cups of this delicious tea since replenishing my supply yesterday afternoon.

I love this place and think my fellow food (and tea) enthusiasts will, too. If you find yourself anywhere near Higganum, CT (just south of Middletown) on a weekend in the near future, I love this place and think my fellow food (and tea) enthusiasts will, you'll want to visit Sundial Gardens for some holiday shopping--even if the shopping is just for you!
