Looking for best Vietnamese in Melbourne inner city

Any recommendations for Vietnamese?

My first instinct is to go to Victoria Street. I find it overwhelming and usually go to Van Mai out of habit. I had a disappointing meal there a while a go and feel the need to go in search of a new option. Now I have a friend in town who has never had Vietnamese food, so now I really want to find a great example.

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

    1. What do you want to eat?

Umm, I'm not sure what my choices are.
Well prepared authentic Vietnamese cuisine using quality ingredients....
I love seafood and generally I find the Vietnamese cook it well.

What do you think Mr Gimlet?

I'm heading to melbourne in Mid January 2010, really looking forward to some good vietnamese food (namely pho). Any recommendations? I have tried the one in the city (that claims bill clinton and jackie chan have eaten there)... I think it's called mekong or something. I thought that was pretty nice. Any other suggestions. I would prefer somewhere in the city, but willing to catch a tram ride to somewhere a little further out if necessary.

Yep, that's mekong. Probably one of the best in the CBD. The other CBD place usually mentioned is Pho Dzung on Russell (I think) but this is the offspring of a more famous suburbs place.

The two viet hotspots are Victoria Street (short tram ride), Springvale (longish train ride) and Footscray (short train ride but wouldn't recommend the station at night).

Ed Charles' blog had a pho roundup but a bit out of date now at http://www.tomatom.com/2007/05/search...

is there much to do in victoria street and footscray, besides vietnamese food? I feel i need to make the tram trip worthwhile if i'm going out that way. Any particular recommendations in victoria street or footscray?

                        1. re: hazna

Hmmm... Footscray has an excellent food market (most of the Viet places are on the edge of it) but that's about it. Victoria Street has an Ikea or you can go down by the Yarra river for a walk but it would be a few stops along I guess.

It's only a ten minute tram ride from the city.
