After-dinner spot near Babbo...
I need someplace to get a really good drink and maybe do some people watching. Since we're planning on trying to walk-in and eat at the bar, I'm sure we will be done pretty early in the evening. Live music is not a must or really even a plus. We like to talk and people watch for the most part. Last trip to Babbo, we went to Waverly Inn before hand to meet a friend, but it's not really good for chatting. The drinks were good, but the D-list socialite who insisted on being the center of attention kinda took the fun out of it.

I don't know about people watching, but you can get great cocktails at Pegu Club, which is about a 10 minute walk away. It's certainly the best cocktail bar in the immediate area.

Great! Pegu was on my list, but I wasn't sure where it was. I am HOPELESS with directions and geography.
Can somebody recommend another yummy place to eat in the general area, if for some reason we don't get a space at Babbo. No Asian or Indian.

If you don't get into Babbo, you could try Lupa, just a few blocks away. It's not as upscale but it is one of Mario Batali's other restaurants, and the food is excellent. You can eat at the bar, or have a glass of wine while waiting for a table (it could be a long wait, but you will eventually get seated).

You can easily walk it, about 5 blocks. Just cut across Washington Square to Thompson St. and then less than 3 blocks south to Lupa.

I actually like Little Branch more then Pegu Club and it may even be closer to Babbo.
