Chioggia Beets

elconde Nov 14, 2009 12:01 PM

Does anyone know where I can get Chioggia beets? I was just at the Union Square farmer's market, and nobody had them. Freshdirect doesn't carry them. Before I start trolling all the nearby supermarkets does anyone happen to know of a place that carries them?

If Pfaffentroth and Migliori--two good sources for beets-- do not have them at the market, I would assume that they are not in season.

Thanks, where are these places? I couldn't find them on Google.

I called Garden of Eden, and they have a shipment coming in on Monday.

Those are two vendors at Union Square. As Erica said, if they don't have them I would think the season is over. But maybe not if Garden of Eden is getting some.

Migliorelli should have them as I just saw a substantial quantity of them at their store in Hudson, New York yesterday.

Thanks for the correct spelling, Rrems!! Migliorelli!

To me, the Chioggia beets, while pretty, have less flavor than plain red beets.

I've actually never tried them, but I was curious when I saw them and this thread made me even more curious.

I agree with Erica regarding the flavor. However, if you can get red, yellow & Chioggia beets at the same time, roast them and dice them up, they make a very pretty salad presentation- little crumbled goat cheese, maybe a Sherry vinaigrette, etc.

Yuno at the farmer's market at UN PLaza had them last Wednesday. The name of her stand has changed but you cannot miss it...she is at Union Square on Fridays, too.
