  1. I haven't been to Fort Scott in some time and really don't remember too much there. However there is a small place on the south side of town called, I believe, Cowboy's, that serves small town drive-in/diner type food. Would be a fun visit since you are there. Will probably see some real cowboys.
Farther south on 69Hwy., near Pittsburg, are a couple of chicken joints. Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary;s each has been there for decades and each is locally famous. Either would be worth the 25 or so mile drive to get there. I hope that you will enjoy your visit.

    1. Nothing fancy, but Nu Grille Cafe is a classic old burger joint that has good food and low prices

Sugarfoot & Peaches BBQ is a neat place with a large menu, though the BBQ is only average.

      1. Cchaz, just curious... where did you end up eating?

Next time you're in Fort Scott, try The Buffalo Grill (American bistro, dinner only) or Nu-Grill (post-war diner, B,L&D). Both are locally-owned places located in the downtown historic district. They're very different, but each is great in its own way.

Powillie, Cowboy's was closed by the tax man, but later reopened. I haven't been since then, so I'm not sure if it's the same. It's next to Marsha's Great Plains Deli, which is much beloved by many locals.

As for the Chicken Mary's vs Chicken Annie's vs Pichler's Chicken Annie's debate... it really depends on if you like a thicker or thinner breading on your chicken and how much garlic you like.

IMHO, the 3 best pieces of chicken in SEK are:
        * The Italian Baked Chicken at Josie's Ristorante Italiano in Scammon (north of Columbus on Hwy 7). Rubbed with rosemary and I'm not sure what else, it's served with a side of spaghetti or fettucini alfredo and a salad.
        * Logan's Chicken at The Buffalo Grill in Fort Scott. Pan fried, topped with caramelized onion and gorgonzola sauce, served on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes.
        * Gebhardt's Chicken (east of Arma/Franklin, toward Mulberry) serves a boneless, skinless chicken breast. Before it's fried, it goes in a garlic butter dip. They serve the Crawford County chicken house standard sides; German potato salad and German cole slaw. Plus Frontenac bread.
