Anneke Jans &Restaurant Week

I have been wanting to try Anneke Jans after reading reviews of other hounds. Had just noticed that AJ was participating in Portsmouth's Restaurant Week (ends Sun, Nov 15) so we made a resv (AJ is in Kittery, ME just over bridge from Portsmouth, NH). What a great deal - $29.95 for 3 courses - appetizer, entree & dessert. The food was fabulous - I had mussels for app, roasted cod over polenta for entree, and lemon crepe with blueberry compote for dessert. Everything was delicious.
The cod was a very generous, thick piece but was perfectly cooked, tender and moist, olives offered an interesting flavor contrast. Even though we ordered from the Rest Wk menu, and only had a glass of wine, the waiter could not have been more helpful or gracious. They offered 4 entree choices on the rest wk menu - the cod, a beef dish, a lamb dish, and a vegetarian dish. So, altho choice was limited there was something for everyone. The dessert list was not limited - my husband had the bread pudding with caramel, and rum sauce, which was outstanding!
Hard to think of a single off-note. Oh, and my husband asked for a recommendation for a dry red wine, and waiter brought the house chianti -- excellent! If rest wk's goal is to attract new diners to try the rest, and motivate them return at full price - mission accomplished! Highly recommend. Their regular prices are a little high, so ck out the menu their website; if your not put off by the prices, you won't be disappointed in the food. Make sure you make a resv, it is a small place, and has a very casual, laid back atmosphere.

  1. I wish we went there. We went to Jumpin Jays and I was disappointed. The scallops were overcooked and tough and the brussels sprouts were undercooked and tough. The cod was good though.
